This is a game changer, folks. Whereas mining stem cells has been either an ethical quandary or a months-long affair, scientist can now turn any old blood cells into stem cells in just 30 minutes—by dipping them in acid.

That's right. Take blood cells, add acid, get stem cells. It's as simple as it sounds.

A team of Japanese scientists stumbled upon the method after observing a similar phenomenon in plants, where environmental stress can morph an ordinary cell into an immature one. New plants could then grow from the immature cell. This has also been known to happen in birds and reptiles, so the team from the Riken Center for Developmental Biology set out to see if something similar could happen with mammals.

I assume we aren't talking about LSD. Otherwise those cells are gonna be all over the place.

Cool story though, definitely a game changer in that field.

Like any major scientific discovery, it was on accident. The ability to make advancements in our species by mere coincidence and happenstance just goes to show how fortunate we should feel to be on top of the food chain.

It also means we have more of a free hand to mess around with things as we get really cool **** that happens when we do.

That is really an amazing discovery though. Now we can have everyone shut up about using stem cells from 'non-happy time' sources and just make them using donor blood. This would completely change the playing field for stem cells too where, like the article says, before it was either a huge ethical deal or very expensive, if we can get repeated verifiable proof it works in humans then we can finally have full on massive testing with stem cells and see what we can do on a large scale with them.

amazing what science can achieve!

the other day, I heard about a 3d printer that made liver tissue!

stuff like this will really help people who have lost limbs or have severe burn injuries and the like.

like our soldiers and veterans.

you see a lot of them coming home missing limbs and it just breaks your heart.

if we can reach the point where we can actually help them to regrow their limbs......that would be amazing!!

Dope stuff, I've long been a supporter of stem cell research. Glad they found a way to get new ones

Fu** morality! There comes a time where playing God is a must!

This is really amazing! I mean in the biggest way possible. What this could lead to boggles the mind.

Leave Doctor Frankenstein to his lab.

Yeah, let's continue watching thousands around us needlessly die. Because "playing God bla bla yadda yadda".

And stem cell research is wrong, period, under any circumstance, because. . . reasons 'n stuff, y'know.

Playing God is deplorable, evil, an abomination and ever so much fun.

Depending who you talk to we may already have won!

Is this meant to be a joke?
Nope. If stem cells can save somebody's life or have them be able to walk again, I'm all for whatever scientists are able to come up with during research!

I totally thought of that first I just conveniently decided to not tell anyone.

@Sloshy: Oh, you're agreeing with us. Cool. Though, if I were being difficult, I'd say you originally meant "F**k antiquated and arbitrary ethics".

It did sound like one of those "we shouldn't mess with God's creation" kinds of things some people spout off.

I did find there to be something ghoulish about using embryonic stem cells.

Great discovery all around.

Embryonic stem cells haven't been a major source for years. There are other ways to get them without the use of embryos that have been used. This is a much easier path however.
