Scorsese, King talking up 'Silence'
Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio Del Toro to star

Martin Scorsese is determined to make "Silence" his next movie. The helmer and Graham King's GK Films are negotiating with Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro to star. Gael Garcia Bernal is also circling the film, expected to begin production later this year in New Zealand.

The drama is set in the 17th century as two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity.

"Silence" is based on the Shusaku Endo novel, which was adapted by Jay *****. Scorsese has had the project on his radar for more than a decade.
The film would be Day-Lewis' third with Scorsese following "Gangs of New York" and "The Age of Innocence." Day-Lewis has completed the Rob Marshall-directed musical "Nine."

"Silence" would mark the first collaboration for Scorsese and Del Toro, who most recently starred in the Steven Soderbergh-directed "Che" and next stars as the title character in "The Wolf Man." Garcia Bernal, best known for "Babel" and "Y tu mama tambien," is in early talks.

There is currently no domestic distributor for the pic. King is financing the film himself, as he did on "Edge of Darkness," the William Monahan-scripted and Martin Campbell-directed drama that stars Mel Gibson.

Scorsese and King have worked together on "The Departed," "The Aviator" and "Gangs of New York."

Scorsese most recently completed an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel "Shutter Island" for Paramount with Leonardo DiCaprio starring.

Scorsese with Benicio Del Toro AND Daniel Day-Lewis?

If I could buy tickets now I would.

This sounds great... Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio Del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal with Scorsese? count me in!:woot:

Great actors, great director. Plot sounds.....not like my cup of tea. But this is Scorsese, so I'm willing to shed all prejudice.

Definitely interested in this. Three of my favorite actors, Scorsese and a very interesting subject... count me in.

So initially, Benidco Del Toro and Gael Garcial Bernal were cast but that was ages ago....NOW I can see Javier Bardem taking over Benico Del Toro's spot. Maybe Edgar Ramirez?

Andrew Garfield joined cast as a lead character.
Garfield will star as Father Rodrigues, a 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit who travels to Japan with a fellow priest amid rumors that Rodrigues’ mentor has abandoned the Church. It is a moment of religious persecution in the Asian nation, with Christians forced to practice their faith clandestinely. Watanabe will portray the priests’ interpreter, alongside a Japanese cast that includes Issei Ogata (who played Emperor Hirohito in Alexander Sokurov’s The Sun). As with Temptation of Christ and his 1997 Dalai Lama biopic Kundun, a box office dud, the commercial prospects for Scorsese’s latest passion project are challenging.

Fantastic! :awesome: Get that Oscah Spider-Man!

Garfield as a portuguese ? Blasphemy !

Watanabe lol.

I've waited for this movie for a long time.

I recommend immensely the Shinoda movie based on the same book.

He did okay playing a Brazilian in Social Network.

I've been waiting for this for a long time. The book is incredible.

If Diego Luna or Javier Bardem played his bud, I think it'll even out, haha.

Shooting's gonna be 3-4 months in Taiwan. They start in June.

The shoot should take around three to four months, and Andrew’s said he’s “very, very excited and honored” to be a part of it and that he was surprised he got the role, because Scorsese is a pioneer in the art and a “film master.”

Leonardo DiCaprio’s name is mentioned in the article, which is written in Chinese and automatically translated through Google, as being rumored to join the cast, but there are no other reports on this, so it may just be an error in interpretation or a false report.

Silence is a novel by Japanese author Shusaku Endo, which tells the story of a Jesuit missionary (played by Garfield) sent to 17th century Japan for a mission; Scorsese has been wanting to turn it into a film for the past twenty years. The movie has a tentative release date of 2015.
