Screenwriting 101 by Film Crit Hulk

I think Hulk just smashed screenwriting 101 into dust.

He's the only writer on that website that dares to write opposing viewpoints from Devin.

You know what..that's true. I like Badass Digest. It's weird with my take on Devin. When he's right, he's right. But damn, he can be relentless to the point where you'd think he hates Nolan when he's actually a fan of some of his work. But he rails on him for certain things where he comes off as overly negative.

I also like Phil for his horror; Evan for his weird humor; but yes, HULK is the most optimistic writer on the site. Dare I say the best.

Devin is a writter but also an oldschool fanboy. so when he goes into fanboy mode he is a mean son of a b... who sounds like he hates everything. its funny and sad.

I love his writing, but those damn Hulk capitalization starts to hurt my eyes after a while.

Dude's also got a tendency to take potshots at JJ and Nolan at completely irrelevant movie reviews.

But he bounces back and forth about his fanboyism. Because he does get nerdy and he's proud of it with the things that interest him. Old Star Trek and Apes. But then sometimes he'll criticized nerds in very broad strokes. There's times where you kinda make you feel ashamed if you like Batman, Star Wars or whatever. You can't pull that sort of stuff; it creates a weird hierarchy. Like Devin IS the acceptable geek that people should strive to be like. It's condescending.

But then he'll go back and defend nerds when it comes to …let's say...o Comic-Con; in which I agree has gotten too Hollywood. The shrine/mecca for geeks got invaded by 'norms', LA *****ebags, and fakers. All the parties there are for the cool people and once again nerds get locked out.

In other words, when you have an extreme personality like Devin's, you'll find contradictions in their viewpoint all the time. Sometimes though, it's compelling enough that you stick by them even when they kinda tick you off.

I had read that 3rd act stuff a long time ago from him. Completely disagree but its a good read.

Film structure is so easy to catch in 95% of movies. It's like they are on loop.

Everything starts with a (bad) foundation. Bad habits from screenwriters.

Any speculation on whether or not HULK is someone famous in writing? His texts imply he is some sort of male TV writer, I think.

I'll be buying his book for fun, though I don't think I'll ever write a screenplay.

What is his third act stuff?

In regards to the comments about Devin. He's the perfect example of a movie nerd website blogger that acts above the rest of us "lowly" fanboys because he's involved with a fairly known site, yet shows his true colors most of the time when he goes negative on a film.

He's a great example of why I can't stand modern day critics *cough*bloggers*cough*. Part of the blame is on the bunch of silly fanboys who seem to worship some of these bloggers. It gives them egos and there's a certain person on the Hype that is another shining example of this.

I'll give Film Crit Hulk some credit because he seems to know what he's talking about at times, but I can't get over his immature Hulk schtick.

For a guy who's penning a book on screenwriting, he could benefit from learning a few rules about online-writing etiquette: namely, not writing with the Caps Lock on.

That is his 'character' though it might be a detriment to his writing, which is surprisingly insightful.

Yes and no, because many writers in Hollywood, or at least how the business works, tend to ignore the obvious.

This hulk guy is a !@#$ and always has been. It amazes me how many people like him.

He definitely can be, he usually recognizes when he's a bit too far off base though and makes a point of apologizing and clarifying what he was going for.

It's one of those cases where he acts like the supreme film expert, to which I say, make your own movie then.

is it possible to writte about anything on the internet without being told to do it yourself? haha :)

When my nephew talks like the Hulk, it's cute. He's in kindergarten.

When a blogger writes like he's the Hulk and expects us to take him seriously, I read something else.

I can't stand that Hulk shtick. I don't think I've made it past the second paragraph of anything he's written.

He's worked in independent features and done some work script doctoring. He appears as himself on a number of podcasts.

He has and often sites his own on-set experiences, especially when writing about acting and actors.

He's worked on a few different Soderbergh movies in various capacities. I don't know his specific credits though.
