Well... Fisk in da house!
1. This really was a debut for Kingpin and Vincent certainly made an impression. From the comics that I remember, Fisk is a man that wants respect, power and control. He came from humble beginnings and is not educated in the academic sense. He puts on airs to the world but at the end of the day is not really all that different from a common thug, despite his cunning and ruthless mind. He loves his wife Vanessa dearly and he partially wants to be great for her sake. Well... I would say they nailed it here. Vincent made interesting choices as an actor in the part, but it worked. The cold bloodedness and fragility of ego which I associate with Fisk are all there. In comics once, during a board meeting some junior lackey type from one of his "legitimate" holdings quotes some Latin aphorism. Kingpin summarily walks over and crushes the guy's head because he felt that he was making fun of his uneducated background. What's interesting is that I really was invested in the parts with he and Vanessa. There was some sympathy to be invoked by Vince's sincere manner. A great debut for the series villain.
2. I knew it would be a matter of time before Claire got put in a bad situation because of her connection to Matt. I didn't think it would be this soon. What's so frightening is to think that what was planned for Claire actually does happen to people all the time all over the world. I like that this incident seems to be bringing Claire closer into Matt's orbit.
3. I enjoyed the Ben and Katen stuff. It was handled very well, and the dialog was very smart. Apparently having proper if outdated office equipment is enough to keep Foggy happy.
4. I liked DD using the environment (and using his gifts to their fullest) this episode. I actually think that he seems to be learning more as he goes on. The ending does suggest that despite Claire's pep talk, that Matt is already reaching the limits of this phase of his career. I think he needs to make that leap from haphazard vigilante to super hero with a code (and he needs to get more sophisticated in metodology).
This was a very entertaining and when it comes to Fisk, insightful episode. Solid all around. On to episode 5.
