NEW SPIDEY ANIMATED COMING TO KIDS’ WB! ON THE CW in '08

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Steve Fritz

Another Marvel hero is returning to the animated frontier. The Kids WB announced it has struck a deal with producer Culver Entertainment to bring everyone’s favorite webslinger back to Saturday mornings.

The series is tentatively titled The Amazing Spider-Man. Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Batman) is supervising producer, Victor Cook (Hellboy: Blood and Iron, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command) is producer/supervising director.

“The addition of Spider-Man bolsters a lineup that has proved to be the Saturday morning destination for kids seeking action and adventure in the most amped-up ways,” Betsy McGowen, Kids WB SVP and General Manager said. “We’re ecstatic to welcome Spider-Man to our popular cavalcade of super heroes.”

"Spider-Man is such an important brand for Sony Pictures and we're thrilled to keep the momentum going by taking it back to television with an animated series on Kids’ WB!," Zack Van Amburg, Sony Picture Television Co-President added. "It's also an excellent way to launch Culver Entertainment, our newest television company."

The new animated series picks up the original web-slinger’s mythology at the beginning of his hero’s journey…as a not-so-typical 16-year-old entering his junior year of high school. Having spent the summer engaging common criminals with his new-found powers, Peter Parker must conceal his secret identity while engaging a new level of terror – the multi-leveled pressures of teenage life at home and school while combating bigger, badder super-villains in the real world.

“Our goal is to reinterpret these great characters and concepts for our millennium,” Weisman said. “We’ll have plenty of resonant material for the Spider-Man fan, while engaging the Spider-Man novice with the same thrills we experienced when we were first exposed to the character. Our stories will appeal on multiple levels with plenty of eye-candy, action, humor and colorful characters for the youngest demographic balanced with extensive character development for ‘tweens, teens and adults.”

No announcement has been made regarding voice cast or what type of animation will be employed. Expect more on this story as it breaks.

I'm glad to see the new animated Spidey series is still coming, but a few things have me worried, namely the fact that this will be on the Kid's WB, and that the producer of "The Batman" is involved.

After the failure of the more adult-oriented MTV Spidey animated series, I was afraid that the next project would be more kid-focused, and I'd guess that's what's happening. We'll see...

Praise God!

I believe this is what we wanted!

I pray this gives a sense of the 90's back to us

"reinterpret"...

That really has me worried.

Anyway; i guess this is the show that was originally supposed to be DTDVD...i guess they liked it enough to televise it...maybe thats a good sign.

Sounds like a slightly different take on Ultimate Spider-Man. Which is cool with me.

Sound like it will be like that Teh Batman cartoon. They should just call it The Spiderman and we could have crossovers where the Joker drinks the black stuff and becomes Joker-Venom.

I'd like to say this sounds cool and jump with praise but it doesn't really sound like much yet. I hope it'll be awesome and that it will get released on DVD because I know I probably won't be watching it on TV

This is awesome news . I'm glad to see Spidey back on Tv .I really hope this new animated series turns into a huge success just like The 1990 's SPIDER-MAN : The Animated Series .

As I said in the other thread under TV shows, I think it'll be average the first season as the writers try to get a feel for the characters. It probably won't get good until the second or third season. Look at Justice League, X-Men: Evolution or The Batman as examples.

Im also a bit curious about this.I think the 1990`s version was great, and i doubt this new series will come even close to it.

the 90ys show was great...

well, the batman dude did gargoyles so there is a glance of hope. on the other hand, i dont hold my hopes too high. i was unimpressed with the mtv show and i have the feeling that this new show will be done after 13 seasons too...

and this will happen to ALL spider-man shows until some muthafocking producer realizes that he cant make money with spider-man as ripoff, but only when he produces a great show.

something semper did in the 90s...

Only thing about 90's version that bugged me was the series finale. But they made up for it with the Release of SpiderMan for PS1 which continued the series and then they finished it off with SpiderMan 2: Enter Electro.

I played those games but barely remember them now. That's cool that they used the games to finish the story of the show.

And Dini's Batman as well.

hopefully this is more Hellboy Animated than it is The Batman :o

The games had nothing to do with the show, they just used some of the same voice actors.

Uh no it wasent lol. Those games had nothing to do with the 90s cartoon. As Abanddon already said the only similarty was the voice actors of Black Cat and Doc Ock were the same ones from the cartoon.

Why? Are you one of those people that's under the impression that Spider-Man: The Animated Series went unfinished? I quite clearly remember the ending was intentional on Marvel's part. Fox Kids had been advertising it as the last season...

Not only was the series entirely finished, but events took place that would have only happened at the end of a series. I mean, Spidey meets Stan Lee, for God's sake. The show did not end abruptly. Just because they ended with Spidey going to get MJ and they didn't SHOW him getting her back doesn't mean that it was one of those shows that ended without a resolution.

Good point. Also; when that Spider-Man: Unlimited toon started up, Peter and MJ were together again in the first episode.

Spider-man: Unlimited wasn't a continuation of the previous series either. It was sort of it's own thing.

That`s something i did not know, but dont belive the saying that they finished the series. There was ment to be another season in which the Green Goblin and Mary Jane came back,it was ment to be Spider-Man searching for her,for most of the season, and then it would end with then being reunited.

This article mentioned a few of the villains that will feature in the show, including Tarantula.
Thanks for the info.

Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Sandman, Venom, Tarantula, Mysterio, The Lizard and Kingpin. It already has a better villain gallery than the MTV series, classics to boot. I'm hoping this animated series is at least good. And I hope it's good enough to last more than 1 or 2 seasons. I await seeing the character designs and I hope it's traditional animation.
