House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 3 - "The Burning Mill"

Directed by Geeta Patel

Written by David Hancock

I'm excited to see what Patel brings in Episode 3 after she knocked it out of the park with maybe the best episode of the first season.

Daemon in Harrenhal was easily my favorite part of this episode. I already thought it looked like something out of a Gothic horror movie during the earlier seasons of GOT but damn they really amped it up here.

Such a cool, creepy ass looking location and I love it.

Harrenhal did look really cool here. Loved seeing Simon Russell Beale.

The Rhaenyra/Alicent scene was the highlight of the ep for me though. Those two pretty much ARE the show to me at this point.

My need for Criston to die only intensified with that haircut.

Some of the shots in Harrenhal reminded me of some old Italian horrors. Stuff like Mario Bava films, like Black Sunday. Crazy atmosphere and tactility to it all. The shot of Daemon atop the stairs in that large room was beautiful.

The jump match cut early on showing the fate of that knight was chilling.

But the Rheanyra/Alicent scene was the episode stealer. Cooke and D'Arcy are operating on ridiculous levels. I loved that the camera and edit allowed for their reactions to play out within their setup. There were like three or four moments where they didn't use a different shot or angle for a reaction and it just adds real weight imo.

The direction this season has really highlighted where so many other big TV shows out right now are lacking. Choices like that to linger on shots and let the natural dynamic of the conversation play out are so powerful, and way to rare on lately.

That part with Aegon and Aemond in the brothel....I hope no one was watching this with their parents. :o

The Harrenhal stuff was awesome, especially the young Rhaenyra cameo.

The last scene with Alicent and Rhaenyra in her shame nun cosplay was great, Cooke and D'Arcy killed it as usual.

The show keeps delivering and the standout for me this episode was the cinematography and the settings. The show just looks fantastic. As usual it's also so captivating seeing a couple of great actors just talking and the scene with Rhaenyra and Alicent really delivered so much between the words. I also enjoyed Simon Strong and how he navigated a discussion with the quite intimidating Daemon.

The Rhaenyra/Alicent scene was the best scene of the season so far.
Rhaenyra’s reaction when for a second she genuinely thought Viserys maybe changed his mind at the end was heartbreaking . But I’m so glad they actually talked about Viserys’s last words so Rhaenyra could know the truth. I hope we get more of Alicent’s reaction to the fact that she misunderstood everything and started all this **** for nothing. She darted out of there pretty quickly once she figured it out Viserys was talking about the Conqueror actually.

The rest of the episode was good too and I liked that what we saw of Aegon. Got to understand more of his character. Daemon in Harrenhal was great too. Hope to see Gwayne give more **** to Crispen in the coming episodes. And anything less than an entire episode dedicated to the torturous death of Crispen won’t be enough at this point :o.

I liked the two previous episodes, but this really was one of the best so far. Geeta Patel already crushed it last season, but she put every dollar on the screen. It's probably the most expensive this show has ever looked and it wasn't even a battle episode. I'm incredibly happy she's also directed the season finale.

So Corlys really doesn’t see the hypocrisy in getting mad at the other lords for rejecting Rhaenys from getting the throne and his reaction/rejection to the thought of Rhaena inheriting Driftmark?

Alicent once again just follows behind the men in her life and does as they say while Rhaenrya is very much the opposite. Their convo was great, so often with movies and tv shows we are like “if only they would talk to each other there wouldn’t be a conflict” but here they do and yet it’s too late.

And yeah everything with Daemon this ep was well done.

The guy playing Aemond looked anorexic naked. :( I get that he's young but it wasn't very attractive, like you wantbto feed him a burger or something.,

Some more things that I liked about the episode.
Seasmoke being restless. Mysaria pointing out that maybe he’s lonely. The realisation on Rhaenyra’s face that maybe Laenor has died out there somewhere. That was a pretty small but cool detail.
I’m curious about when we see the Dragonseed get to do their thing. And I wonder when Nettles will be introduced.
Milly Alcock! :wowe: Daemon seems to genuinely regret what he’s done. Curious to see what that leads to.
Another highlight was the scene between Alicent and Helaena. I really hope we get to see Alicent come to realise just how much destruction she’s caused especially to Helaena.
Oh and
our first look at Alys Rivers. Very curious to see the show’s take on the character.
Edit: Oh and also the music. Ramin is killing it as always :hrt:.

Edit #2: Oh and also also, Rhaenyra did everything to try and avoid war. She literally risked her own life. Now the greens truly are to blame for all of what is about to happen so I better not hear any of these filmmakers try and “both sides” this war :o. This whole thing was orchestrated by the greens with Alicent’s little mistake giving Otto all the ammunition he needed. If they are doing this for selfish purposes, then show them to be selfish and not doing this for the “good of the realm”. Clearly that’s not their concern.

Now wasn’t Otto always planning with the council to overthrow Rhaenrya and put Aegon on the throne? I thought there was a scene in S1 where they told Alicent they had always had a plan.

That whole brothel sequence was surprisingly explicit, there was a moment right before Aemond that was straight out of Caligula.
While it was clearly a prosthetic, I'm surprised that HBO let them get away with that. It was a little much even for GOT/HOTD.

Yes, but since Alicent never knew about it she unwittingly threw fuel on that fire by telling him what she thought was Viserys's final wish.

That he was. If I remember correctly, there was a scene where right after Viserys’s death a distraught Alicent tells Otto and some other guy who was there too about what Viserys said, and his reaction was oh great that makes it easier for us. I don’t remember exactly how that scene went though because season one was so damn long ago. I think it’s fair to assume he’s been planning something like this since probably Aegon was born seeing how he started pushing Alicent on Viserys like a whole 2 seconds after his wife’s death.

Oh and the director is confirming that 3 of those eggs were indeed Dany’s. Apparently the books suggested a different origin so that’s an interesting change. I wonder if GRRM was involved in that change.

I mean, he had an obvious vested interest in Rhaenys getting the throne - he would have been king consort of Westeros. That he isn't willing to be consistent and grant his legacy to his granddaughter is unfortunate but not surprising.

I'm very interested to see how Alyn and Baela's romance plays out on the show

Now why didn’t Rhaena claim Seasmoke?
That's honestly a great question. It's not entirely clear in F&B why certain children get dragon eggs and why others claim riderless dragons. I don't know why Rhaena wouldn't be encouraged to claim Seasmoke or one of the others like Silverwing when her egg failed to be hatch. She is fairly timid, but its clear she desperately wants to be a rider, you'd think she would have tried.

Yeah it’s not even something I was thinking of until the show went out of its way to talk about Seasmoke being lonely and Rhaena thinking Baela was only staying because she had a dragon.
