Selling Comics

Hello, I am going to sell off my large collection of modern comics.

Do you think it would be better/more profitable to sell them in bulk or to divide them and sell them as individual series?

It all depends on what you have. If for example you have Amazing Fantasy #15, then I'd say sell it by itself. If you don't have anything too rare, then sell them in sets. What I've done in the past is post several sets on an e-bay auction and I'd tell the bidders that they get to pick the two or three sets of their choice. This way you'd have a wider range (and larger number) of bidders. If you don't have anything rare, don't expect to make much money on them (be happy if you break even).

Your best bet is probably to sell them individually on ebay. (I figure that's how you're going. Most comic shops aren't buying, and those that do aren't going to give you very much cash for your books.) If you sell the whole set, you'll either not get as much as you were hoping for, or you'll ask too much and nobody will bite. (After all, most collectors will have many of those books. I think I have every one you've listed.)

Plus, by selling them individually, you can always get a little more with your shipping and handling charge. (Just make sure you realize how much the cost of shipping has gone up....especially if you don't use Media Mail.) And, those who want to purchase more can be given a good discount when buying more than one bunch of books.

Still, you aren't going to get anything compared to what you paid for most of those regular price. I always advise people not to sell if they don't have to. Somewhere down the line, you're going to remember your old collection with fondness, and the money you got for them will be long ago spent with hardly anything to show for it. (A lesson I wish someone would have told me. I sold my first collection for $2,000, and now some of those books I'll be hard pressed to ever own, including a complete X-Men collection from 94-200, and the first appearance of Wolverine.) Plus, it's a great thing to pass down to your future kids.

Sell complete sets together (ie a full mini series) but it's got to be cheaper than buying a trade of it.

You're going to have some trouble selling the incomplete minis, arcs and odd issues.

Yeah, you have to sell them as sets. But, $10.00 is more than I'd ever spend on ebay, especially when shipping and handling will increase the price sooo much more. (It's cheaper going to mycomicshop.com and spending $50.00 to avoid shipping charges most times.)

I've learned that most people expect to get too much for their comics. Every once in a while, you'll get a buyer. But, I can usually be patient and get comics I want for under a buck a book on ebay easily. Or, like I said, I can go on mycomicshop.com and even pick up classic issues in VF or F condition (which look better than a whole lot of stuff I've supposedly bought in NM condition on ebay) for $1.49.

BTW, I'm so happy. I just got the last issue I need to complete my What If? collection: What If? Vol. 1 #24. Plus, I'm only 1 issue away from having the full set of Spectacular Spider-Man (1976): Annual #1.

A little help with the pricing guys?

Here is how I figure the pricing of my comics I have sold in the past. First, I always like to give the buyer the deal. Second, I go to two locations: milehighcomics.com and mycomicshop.com. See what they are selling there books for (and, make sure you're accurate in your conditioning prices) and then do it lower. After all, many times, it's one of your fellow hypesters. (Also, since you wanted 10 bucks a set, you might already know you want about 2.00 bucks a comic. Just make sure he can't get the same comic for a whole lot cheaper elsewhere!)

I'll also vouch for Ahura. He's a great and honest guy. And while I'm still interested in the comics we just had some car issue so it'll have to wait for another day... perhaps a few weeks. Don't hold out on my account though.

And hey Phaed. Yeah, still into the comics and things are going better lately. I hate that I don't have the comics I had to sell, but I'm buying them in spirts and filling gaps when I can (thus, my request above). I'm big into the binding thing now (binding comic books in the order I want them into hardback volumes) so I just buy the comics I plan on binding soon. I know a lot of fans are hesitant about it (as it hurts the comic's value) but I personally love it.

As for my book, I hit a slow point but I'm back on it gung hoe. I have about 5 more chapters to finish editing through and I'm done. I'll be looking for an agent then to give publication a shot. Cross your fingers for me

P.S. Phaed, Ahura... My computer's down, but I've got another Marvel Game in mind soon that you guys might be interested in. A bit of a role playing mystery set in the marvel universe. A kinda hypewhodunit. It's still in the early stages, but I'm getting excited about it. It'll invovled Marvel characters, creativity, deception, and marvel comic knowledge. A very in depth game. I'm hoping to get it going here in a few months.
