State Senator Robert Ford is hoping to outlaw lewd language and is pushing for a bill that would prohibit profanity.

Under the pre-filed bill, profanity could land you in jail for up to 5 years and/or cost you up to $5,000 in fines.

Which words are exactly considered profane is still unclear, but the bill does have a list of qualifications for profanity including words or actions that are lewd, vulgar or indecent in nature.

We spoke to Debra Gammons with the Charleston School of Law about freedom of speech.

She reminds that the First Amendment is not absolute. You cannot say whatever you want whenever you want to.

Courts will usually look at where the words were said and who heard them. Children are usually protected.

Is he a Republican, sounds like something a Republican would do.

He's from South Carolina, which explains plenty.

**** Ford in the ****ing *******. No ****ing dick is going to shut my mother****ing mouth, ****.

WARNING SLIPPERY SLOPE ARGUMENT AHEAD

See the next thing that happens is talking badly about a person is made illegal even if it's not slanderous in nature. Then talking badly about a company or an organization. Then before you know it we're all wearing red sashes and trying to hide out of view of the television so that this guy can't hear our damn thoughts.

Damn.

"Robert Ford, you are fined 1 credit for violation of the verbal morality code"

This is just f'ing stupid because how the hell would it be enforced and are we really going to chuck more people in our already overcrowded jails for saying a swear word?!?!

The problem here is, what's profane to some isn't profane to others. And to further complicate things; would it be ok to curse in other languages? If not, there a lot of learning foreign expletives simply in order to prevent them.

It would be great if this went to Senate and a bunch of senators just jumped up and said, "**** yeah let's outlaw profanity!"

I see him semi-frequently, he's getting cussed out next time.

I wish George Carlin was alive to hear this.

We already have something similar to this, it's called "The Hate Crime Act"

Is this guy trying to fill a quota on bills introduced or something?

What is his reason for this? Let me gues, "For the Children"?
