It comes down to worth ethic in some ways. If you are in a male orientated society and you express concerns about maternity leavers and also put in the hours, you may well be rewarded.

or perhaps sexist people think breadwinning is a man's job and simply commit more of their time to it.

I wouldn't call it sexism, more like traditionalists.
