The organization that provided Loki with scientists to help Selvig build the machine to harness the Tesseract's energy, and the soldiers that help Hawkeye attack the Helicarrier. Who were they?

I'd bet it's either HYDRA, connecting the movie to Captain America: The First Avenger and possibly setting up Captain America 2 and S.H.I.E.L.D., or AIM, which is more direct to science and is the only big group of villains yet to the introduced in the MCU.

Opinions?

It's the U.S. military. An espionage agency has fighter jets, nuclear weapons, and a giant flying base. They get nervous.

My inclination would be, Hydra. AIM tends to be less with the mooks and more with the mad science. I could be wrong, though.

This team seemed a combination of both. The mad science lab in Stuttgart certainly is suggestive of AIM, but the grunts could easily be HYDRA.

More than likely, though, they're just a generic band of terrorists. AIM and/or modern HYDRA probably will be formally introduced sometime soon in the Cap and/or Avengers sequel.

Just SHIELD agents or whomever under Loki's control, nothing special is my guess.

Probably nothing special but I'd love if they connected it to Hydra or AIM. Hawkeye did at one point say that SHIELD has no shortage of enemies, which, knowing Marvel Studios, could definitely point to a bigger group.

i want to say HYDRA but it could be AIM, but AIM is an offshoot of HYDRA so if that hasn't happened yet it could be just HYDRA

If they were really SHIELD or army guys, the films heroes were certainly not thinking twice about using lethal force on them.

^Then there would have been no need for Hawkeye to mention Shield's enemies.

Hawkeye stated that Shield has enough enemies.

They weren't SHIELD agents.

One or two were.
In addition to Hawkeye, Loki controlled another SHIELD agent (tall, blond-haired, dark glasses --- I still think he was supposed to be Quartermain) at the JDEM.

But otherwise, I'd say the rest were mercs of some sort or other. I just wonder how many were actually mind-controlled and how many were there for the money and/or the chance to take on SHIELD.

I say most of them that went with Hawkeye in the Helicarrier are there to destroy SHIELD

I assumed Hawkeye just rounded up Mercs who were enemies of Hydra. I doubt it was one specific organization. I feel that if it was Hydra it would have warranted a mention.

When Hawkeye said that SHIELD had enemies in response to Selvig's question about how Loki got his tech and troops, I automatically assumed the "soldiers" were Hydra and the scientists were from A.I.M. It would make sense as a continuation of events In CA:TFA. Since we know that in CA2 Captain America will work with SHIELD, having HYDRA in The Avengers would be a good way to tie the movies together.

I think I'm going to go with a modern day HYDRA myself, maybe lead by Viper in Red Skull's absence? (Hey, that would give you guys some more cheesecake to gawk at in a future Avengers movie!)

What I don't understand is, why were they being so coy about their identity? Why not just come out and say it?

They probably left it ambiguous in order to have wiggle room when the sequels are written. Whedon or one of the other writers will pick up the threads from The Avengers eventually, and they will probably want to have some leeway when (or if) they have to explain just who Loki's human allies were. For instance, if they locked themselves in by calling them HYDRA, that would make it hard to later say that A.I.M.'s scientists were in charge of the operation. Or vice versa. Leaving the affiliation of the techs and thugs undefined gives later creators room to fit them into their own scripts.

Yea defiantly AIM, they work with other villains...didn't they?

Hawkeye specifically said when asked who they were, that SHIELD has many enemies. They are definitely not just random SHIELD agents under Loki's control.

Dude, we spent the last two years in epic flamewars asking the same question about why they were being so coy about the identity of "Loki's (Alien) Army".....you think they're suddenly gonna show transparency with the identity of Loki's *other* (non-alien) army....? :oldrazz:
