Should they make a DIAL H FOR HERO movie with the original stories featuring Robby Reed? Instead of a magic word to turn into a superhero, you have an alien dial that enables you to become a new superhero everytime you dial, making you have to figure out what powers you have and how they can be applied to solve the problem you dialed for.
Or should it be made into a weekly TV show?

I used to think Dial H for Hero would make for one hell of an animated series, but Cartoon Network went and made Ben 10...

Only if they make the device the real "star" of the movie in the vein of The Red Violin film or the cat in Stephen King's Cat's Eye. Show how it turns the lives of those who possess it. A number of short tales in one movie with the device being the only connection. You can go deeper than that and connect the stories in a vague way, then gradually reveal the connection.

I would rather this be an animated TV series. Remember Dial H for Hero was a comic title where readers were allowed to submit heroes of their own creation to the editors. They would then choose a number of heroes/heroines and use them in the proceeding issues. This similar format could be used in a TV series today and may turn out to be quite entertaining among kids and teens, seeing that shows like TOON's "Ben 10" and Disney's "The Replacements" are popular now, they could easily come up with a show like Dial H where viewers could submit their heroes and they could be seen on a show later on in the season.

This would work.
Beats the crap out of that disappointing and dreadful "Who wants to be a Superhero?'
However, the original 1960's Robby Reed stories didn't ask for hero ideas, that came later, in the 1970's. The original stories were 'what if' heros that they played around with.
The idea of doing an animated/request would work, regardless of Ben10, which is an obvious take-off of the Dial H premise.
Robby Reed was the only user of the dial originally, but if they set it up so that a close knit group of friends had the use of the dial, I think that would have more possiblities. One kid can't be everywhere all of the time.
(You couldn't explain his absences very well.)
That way, you could have more problems, more opportunities for both guys AND girls to use the dial, with the added problems of what might happen if a not-so-nice kid used the dial. That happened in the original House of Mystery Dial H and it never had the chance to really be explored.
I think dnno1 is onto a good idea.
Any more?

As long they something soon that's fine with me. Do something for DC.

They should make a TV series based on H.E.R.O. That would kick ass.

H.E.R.O. was a bit heavy for this kind of thing.
It would have to be more along the lines of Dial H for Hero.
Relatively light, but with enough action to ensure participation from the viewers for future character ideas and plots.
It's good guy/bad guy.
H.E.R.O. had a lot of ambiguities built in that made it neccesary to follow all of the issues, or you lost the thread.

And that's a bad thing? H.E.R.O would make a far better TV series.

But it wouldn't appeal to the lowest common denominator. H.E.R.O. would gather a small, niche audience that will barely get the show a full first season.

So, you'd want a crappy stpuid show instead of it being the best it could possibly be just because it would be on longer if it was the former?

I didn't say that at all. I just said the better show wouldn't last on TV very long.

We wouldn't know that until we tried. Lost seems to be doing very well.

Lost dropped drastically in quality toward the end of season 2. I've had nothing but complaints. I'm still planning to watch season 3 religiously, but still...

I've only seen season one, so I wouldn't know.

(It took a while to find this.
Things get buried pretty fast on these boards.)
I like dnno1's idea of combining the original idea for the Dial with the request line, but the first 5 or 6 shows would have to be Robby Reed to catch everyone's attention.
With the current popularity of Heroes, (and this thread was started before Heroes came out) this is probably a show that wouldn't get off the ground, although I'd be surprised if it wasn't a hit with the teen crowd.
Of course, with the popularity of Creep Show, I'm very surprised they didn't start a House of Mystery series.

Server must be getting a lot of traffic. Everything is posting slow and 2 times.

It would fullfill the promise of "Who Wants To Be A Superhero?" without the cheesy crap, hopefully. Oh, sorry, that was that guy from Marvel. (Wasn't that a TV series back in the '60's?

I really hope that some movie company picks this idea up and makes a film before its too late.
It would be a great movie, and can spawn numerous sequals and toys.
Its a great story that could pull in big crowds and a wide demographic.
I can see it being done in the same light as Spider-man, not so dark and violent but still dark enough to have villians and fighting. But could appeal to familes and kids too.

It would be so cool, a regular guy who uses the dial and becomes several different super heroes in full blown costumes like Spider-Man or Superman. I just can't believe that we haven't heard news about scripts or a company buying the rights to the movie or some rumbblings.

I can see Toys R Us selling "Dial H for Hero" dials.

Geez, has been almost a year since this thread was started?
It is a shame that we've not heard one thing from anyone about this very original story concept being made into a series or a Special Event movie.
I would love to see SciFi Channel get their hands on this.
If they used the original Robbie Reed stories for the series, I think someone somewhere would see how much fun this could be.
It would sell tons of merchandise, just because of the different characters. The Dial itself could be sold as an MP3 player/CD Player.
It could even be tied into a special marketing plan, i.e.- the Dial can spin different number combos to give you a winning online game ticket for a special appearance on the show.
The possiblities, like the number of heros/villians from the Dial, would be endless.

Greetings! I have written a movie treatment for Robbie Reed Dial H for hero. The movie features Robbie Reed in 1966 and Vicky Grant, Chris King in present day. The Master and The Wizard are at the core of the action. 9 New superheros make an appearance and the orgin of the dial is tied in. Think of Civil War meets Feris Buellers day off.
