...Instead of the Bible, for it is the Supreme Law of the Land which our leaders are sworn to uphold.

(To be fair the third option is rather redundant since that is technically the rule already).

Let them swear on what ever they want.

Let people be sworn in on whatever the hell they want. Its not like it will stop them from breaking the oath anyway.

I like this idea. Maybe then they would be a little less likely to wipe their arse with it.

I think they should be sworn in on a pile of money.
that's the only thing politicians hold any regard for anyway.
because swearing them in on a stripper and a pile of coke would just be in bad taste.

That and the stripper would get cold, seeing as how the inaugriation is in January.

They should swear in on this:

Swearing in is ******ed.
They shouldn't do it at all, it's meaningless.
You should judge a man by his actions, not the promise of future actions.

It's like the "if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." thing.
If a dishonest guy secretly doesn't uphold the law, what're you gonna say when he's caught,
"But....but....you PROmised. :csad:"

:whatever:

ShadowBoxing, that would have been a good idea, but unfortunately, it doesn't matter anymore given that the courts(Judicatory Branch) are now beginning to adopt International Law, while the congress(Legislator Branch) is stripping and weakening the Constitution.

Hahaha, it's also pretty hilarious and telling that they swear on the Bible...seeing as how in the Bible GOD FORBIDS HIS FOLLOWERS TO SWEAR OR TAKE OATHS.

:whatever:
planet of morons

Keep it the way it is. Why change it?

I picked option 3. When I'm elected, I'll get sworn in on a copy of Naked Lunch. Take that. :o

Well said.

It doesn't make sense anyway because the choice of what you "swear on" is based on some silly sense of authority or power invested IN the thing you're swearing on.

So swearing on the Constitution, to uphold the Constitution...(which apparently NEEDS your "upholding" and defense), automatically indicates that the Constitution does not have an authority/power of it's own, but rather a power we decide to bestow upon it.

So it's a nonsensical loopy thing.

It's like:
"Why do you believe in God?"
"Because the Bible SAYS there's a God."
"Well how do you know the Bible is right in saying that?"
"Because the Bible is God's Holy, perfect word."

Hahahaha. :o

It's tradition. Traditions and other such events are important, I think. If we did everything based solely on what's practical, things would be pretty ****ing boring. It doesn't hurt anything, so there's no reason not to do it.

It's not like that at all. You're analogy isn't apt.

Swear them in on whatever they want. They have the freedom of religion.

Yes but religion should have NO place in politics. The constitution needs to be reviewed every term to remind and be UPDATED.

But they aren't swearing an oath of religion, they are swearing an oath of public office.

I know that, but if it means more to them to swear on the Koran than the Bible, let them. If they want to swear on a copy of Batman: Year One let them.

I would be ashamed of any leader who takes his responsibilities which such a pithy attitude as to swear on a copy of Batman: Year One. When you take public office you are swearing to uphold the Supreme law of the land (i.e the constitution)...not Batman: Year One or the Quran or the Bible. And you are also swearing to do what is constitutional and in the public interest EVEN IF it conflicts with your religious beliefs.

Do you even understand the post you quoted?

Yes, I do. I unserstand that they are swearing on an oath of office. The whole point of swearing in on the Bible is because it represents a promise (rediculous, I know, they lie anyway) that they made on a religious scale of importance. Since not everyone is a Christian, they should get to swear on whatever book they want.

I want to be sworn on this:

In all seriosnous though, I am a Christian I truly do believe that religion should have no part in the government, or at least specific religions. I honestly think that the fact that religion has actually played a part in the government is the reason why there's so much hate against Christians these days.

Our politicians should not be swearing, it gives our country a bad image.:o
