Well, the inks very much overpower the shades. They shouldn't be so drastically different, afterall the inks are there to denounce the shadows, you've got to flow from the shadows to the highlights. I'm not sure if i'm explaining this well. Your highlights are very soft, and don't have enough depth to work in conjunction with your shadows. therefore the shadows take precedent, causing the image to look flat =X
