Joe Carnahan is Smokin' Aces

Source: Production Weekly
August 6, 2005

Narc writer/director Joe Carnahan is set to helm Smokin' Aces, an ensemble action-comedy dealing with the disappearance of a semi-famous Las Vegas magician, says Production Weekly.

When Las Vegas performer-turned-gangster, Buddy Israel, decides to turn state's evidence and testify against the mob, it seems that a whole lot of people would like to see him dead.

Production on the film is scheduled to start in mid-October in Lake Tahoe and Los Angeles.

Narc director Joe lines up his next project
08 August 2005

Since the success of gritty crime drama Narc, Joe Carnahan has had Hollywood banging on his door, knocking on his window and generally making a nuisance of itself by leaving notes on his car windshield saying "Joe, call us!" But it hasn't all been plain sailing – in the three years since Narc blew the critics away, it's been one delay after another.

First, in 2002, there was the mooted Harrison Ford cop drama A Walk Among The Tombstones, based on the novel by Lawrence Block. Ford was going to make that his follow-up to Hollywood Homicide, but was obviously left with no taste for police work after that caper. In 2003, Carnahan was announced to direct Mission: Impossible 3, but followed David Fincher out the door due to "creative differences". He was also announced as the director for Killing Pablo, based on the hunt for drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, and due to star Antonio Banderas and Javier Bardem – but that too seems to have fallen by the wayside.

So could the latest news, that he has another new film on the go, end his run of bad luck? We can only hope so. He's signed on to make Smokin' Aces, a Las Vegas-set ensemble action-comedy. The hero is a magician called Buddy Israel, a performer-turned-gangster-turned-State's-evidence. Unsurprisingly, there are a whole lot of people who would rather see him dead than giving evidence against the mob, so he engineers his own disappearance – which is where being a magician, and expert in disappearing acts, comes in handy.

The film will be shooting in LA and Lake Tahoe from October, so with only two months until filming, let's hope that this project actually makes it that far.

Andy Garcia is Smokin' Aces

Source: Variety
October 14, 2005

Andy Garcia has pacted to make the Joe Carnahan-directed Smokin' Aces his next film job, reports Variety.

Garcia will join Jeremy Piven, Ryan Reynolds, Alicia Keys and Ben Affleck in the action comedy about an illusionist who snitches on the mob and has hitmen after him.

Garcia will play the FBI director who tries to keep the cocky entertainer around long enough to testify. Universal and Working Title are producing.

Cant wait for this...Piven finally has a front billing!

Sounds great. Piven is hilarious and a great actor, and this should hopefully pull Affleck out of his slump. He gets a lot of hate just because of his love life. Not fair to the dude.

Not to mention, Narc frikkin rocked. I can't wait to see what else Carnahan has up his sleeve. (I'm still hopin' he'll direct the Wolverine movie.)

NARC was fantastic, Affleck is great in supporting roles...and this cast is rounding out pretty good...

damn i wondered why it had taken so long for another film by him.

Who is playing the magician? Reynolds, Affleck, or Piven?

Dammit, everytime this thread gets a post i keep hoping it's gonna be some pics from the movie

IMDB says it filmed on 10/21/05 at The Horizon Casino & Caesers Casino

Piven is not the star. The film is an ensemble through and through.

Well Piven plays the magician Buddy Isreal

Synopsis

BUDDY "ACES" ISRAEL (Jeremy Piven) is a Vegas card sharp *** gangster and former member of the La Cosa Nostra (LCN), one of the largest criminal organizations in the United States. In exchange for a vanishing act with Witness Protection, Israel (who is currently hiding out in the penthouse of The Nomad Casino in Lake Tahoe with his posse of bodyguards and hookers), has agreed to testify against his former mentor, PRIMO SPARAZZA, and the LCN.

When the terminally ill Sparazza takes out a $1 million contract on Israel's life, word quickly spreads through the underground crime world. The catch: Sparazza wants Israel's heart. FBI agents RICHARD MESSNER (Ryan Reynolds) and DONALD CARRUTHERS (Ray Liotta) learn that Sparazza has hired "a specialist" to do the job and that rogue LCN members SERNA and PADICHE are also recruiting someone to take Israel out. Realizing that it is only a matter of time before the rest of the world is hipped to Israel's whereabouts and seeks to cash in on the contract, FBI director STANLEY LOCKE (Andy Garcia) dispatches Messner and Carruthers to Lake Tahoe to secure their key witness.

Simultaneously, bail bondsman JACK DUPREE (Ben Affleck) and ex-cops HOLLIS ELMORE (Martin Henderson) and PETE DEEKS (Pete Berg) are hired by Israel's lawyers - who were left holding the bag when Israel skipped bail - and sent to Tahoe to pick him up and return him to Vegas.

Meanwhile, Serna and Padiche's recruits: diva assassins GEORGIA SYKES (Alicia Keys) and SHARICE WATTERS (Taraji Henson), master of disguise: LAZLO SOOT, torture extremist: PASQUALE ACOSTA and neo-Nazis: THE TREMOR BROTHERS all make their descent on Lake Tahoe with the same intention - take out Israel by any means necessary.

Chaos ensues as hit men and FBI converge on the penthouse of The Nomad - bullets fly, loyalties shift and lives end - and shocking secrets are revealed involving FBI cover-ups, hidden motives and true identities.

Ryan Reynolds as an FBI AGENT??!?!?!

Affleck as a Bail Bondsman???!?!?!?

FOr some reason I see these roles really working...espescially since Reynolds is apparently going to be along with Ray Liotta a lot...that should be...very, very interesting...

Alicia Keys hits the right acting notes
By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith

Though Ryan Reynolds had his doubts about working with Alicia Keys in Joe Carnahan's recently wrapped "Smokin' Aces," he says the singer has much stronger film chops than he expected.
"Going in you're thinking, 'Oh, God, this is going to be tough. Am I going to have to slow down so they can keep up?' But that wasn't the case at all," he lets us know. "I'm surprised she hasn't done a movie before because she's so natural. She's going to blow everybody away."

The action comedy, which also includes Ben Affleck, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle and Jeremy Piven, is "about a Mafia, Vegas-showman kind of guy who ends up in Tahoe and is about to become a witness in a federal case against the mob," explains Reynolds. "I'm the FBI agent with Ray Liotta, who's assigned to go get him and bring him back alive - but at the same time there are eight different assassins that are all converging on the same hotel suite in Tahoe."
