And I must say, it was one of the greatest films I have ever watched. I can't believe I've waited this long to watch the movie. I can remember growing up watching My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service but that was about as far as my exposure to Anime went.(Aside from the occasional episode of Dragon Ball, Pokemon, etc.)
Watching Akira really made me want to get into anime and really find out what ive been missing. Can anyone suggest anything good?

You're on a roll with Studio Ghibli, try Porco Rosso.. Michael Keaton did the lead English version.

i generally despise anime's, but this one was quite awesome and the animation was impressive.

- Cowboy Bebop (then Cowboy Bebop: The Movie)
- Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Gundam Wing (then Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz)
- Outlaw Star
- Tenchi Muyo/Tenchi Universe

Definitely check out Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. They're both amazing fantastical movies that will blow your mind visually and they both have a sense of fun and innocence at the same time.

the latest anime i bought was Paprika, another visually insane film. imo its not as good as any Studio Ghibli production, but still buyable.

Incidentally I'm about to watch Akira this weekend. Do you guys recommend dubs or subtitles?

*Shudders* Most overrated piece of **** to ever grace the screens of Otaku's all around the world.

if you haven't seen Ninja Scroll then definitely check it out. it's not the same subject material, but it's the same quality anime. other great anime movies are Princess Mononoke and (like Ender Durden suggested) Spirited Away. if you're in the mood for something dark and Castlevania-ish then Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter: Bloodlust are a good watch.

It's more of a mini series than a movie, but FLCL is the one thing everyone needs to watch at least once.

- Monster
- Bleach
- Animatrix (Better than all three Matrix movies put together)

Just when I thought Akira couldn't be any more awesome, I purchased the Blu Ray and was blown away. A true masterpiece of cinema. Try checking the manga as well. The story is developed a bit more, plus the ending is a bit more climatic and explained a bit more.

I didn't see it until last month when I got it on blu ray as a blind buy. It was worth it.

Millenium Actress
Rurouni Kenshin

To each their own. Evangelion is one of my all time favorites.

In terms of recomendations if you want a movie:
Howl's Moving Castle
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Grave of the Fireflies
Paprika
Perfect Blue

and some kick ass series:
Cowboy Bebop
Gurren Lagann

I've only watched, or am currently watching, a few anime series:

Death Note--suspense/crime drama; the characters introduced toward the end of the series leave something to be desired, but the writing is always quality and it's a great series overall
Bleach--long-running fantasy/action series; I like it a lot so far (I'm only halfway through season 1), and I've heard it gets better
Gurren Lagann--mecha series with a good bit of comedy; it takes some getting used to, but it's good; I'm six episodes in and I heard it gets epic
The Big O--another mecha series; I really like the futuristic noir atmosphere of the show and the fights are cool; I'm only four episodes into the second season (I didn't watch the first) and I'm not sure how the overarching plot is

I think the only anime movie I've seen is Spirited Away and it's really good.

Stick with it. You heard correct, it is freaking epic. I'm on episode 20 of my second viewing of it, and it is a wonderful series.

Bleach is great, but it hits about 40 episodes of filler when you get to around episode 65. It's not the worst filler, but as the problem with most of the long running shonen series, it just gets really old and laborious. Skip the filler if at all possible, trust me, you won't miss much.

Congratulations sir, you have inspired me to crack open my Akira DVD which has been collecting dust for several years.

On topic, I won't beat a dead horse, but as most have mentioned pretty much anything by Studio Ghibli is well worth checking out.

As for a series, you really can't go wrong with Cowboy Bebop. You can even pick up the entire series for like fourty bucks now, too. And not that it really matters, but the movie is supposedly set between episodes 22 and 23.

I'm surprised to see no one mention Ghost in the Shell. The movie and the series are both fantastic.

Also if you liked the first Matrix movie and didn't care for the sequels very much, then The Animatrix is pretty good as well.

I saw someone mention Fooly Cooly. FLCL is like one of my favorite...things ever, but this series should generally be avoided until you're more familiar with anime in general.

That's awesome how you checked out "Akira" the day I reviewed it. Not saying that was the cause; it's just ironic and cool.

It's my favorite anime and one of the few I can still tolerate to watch.

Congratulations on discovering the glory of Akira.
Here's some others that I like:
Ninja Scroll
Fist of the North Star
Ghost in the Shell
Appleseed
..there's others but I have to go to school.

^ Ghost in the Shell is other-world-y (the rest, not so much :oldrazz:)

Alright, I'll have to check out some more studio ghibi stuff. I don't really like anything that's ninja related but will check out most of you're guy's suggestions.

i'll be honest: The Ghibi stuff are the movie that i want to show to my kids (when I have kids that is)

Cowboy Bebop goes without saying

My other favs..

Samurai Champloo
Gundam Wing
Outlaw Star
Ninja Scroll
Afro Samurai
G Gundam
YuYu Hakusho

And I'd be betraying my child self if I didn't say DBZ and Pokemon too.
