Sommers Is Out As Director

Maybe they'll actually get someone good.

Yeah I hope so but we'll still have Tatum as Duke. :(

I liked Rise Of Cobra so I hope it does get a sequel.

Well, now all the fanboys can come up with dream directors to take this on.

I don't really have one, all I want is a director that understand the material enough to make a good movie out of it since I think the property has potential to be good.

The franchise is still FUBARed.

Needs a reboot to get the smelly stain of Sommers off of it.

Have you watched the animated series? I think Sommers understood the material fine.

But there's more to the franchise than the cartoons like for an example the comics Larry Hama wrote but I don't hold a grudge against Sommers, he did the best he could with a script that was rushed before the "Writers' Strike" happen, a similar case to ROTF.

I nominate the man born for this job: Michael Bay

He's finished his Transformers trilogy, his schedule is clear and this would far better suit him than Transformers.

I would also nominate Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Die Another Day, The World is not Enough) for screenwriting.

Even though I'm not sure if it needs a reboot, I bet my bottom dollar thats happening.

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick who did Zombieland was hired to write the script for the sequel a year ago and Michael Bay said he wants to do a small movie after TF3.

I see people bringing this up time and time again; as if taking cues and atmosphere from the cartoon instead is somehow wrong or less authentic...

I don't know if I'd want Bay for the job. Sure, he is very pro-military and thus knows how to make military-themed characters look good on the big screen. However, he also doesn't like being told what to do/criticised and instead goes in the opposite direction (e.g. fans wanting Arcee with her winding up unceremoniously killed off in TF2, people criticising about the potty and racist humour resulting in even more blatant ones in TF2, etc). Fans calling for more ninjas would probably result in Snake Eyes getting head-shotted by Cobra Viper #47 ten minutes into the movie while Storm Shadow gets taken out offscreen by wrecking ball testicles.

P.S.: Yeah, I know I'm exaggerating but you know what I'm getting at, right?

Where in my post did I wrote that? What I meant is there's more to the franchise than the cartoons and the comics Hama wrote it's pretty good, it could have drawn a better influence towards a better story but then again he was hired as a creative consultant so I guess it means nothing but the movie could have been worse. Like I wrote in my previous post it's not Sommers' fault, it's the script that was rushed and we end up with Rise of Cobra.

Dude? The script that was used was largely based on that clunky "Rex turning evil" mess that was circulating on the internet for years.

Anyhow I think they really need to bring in Warren Ellis as a creative consultant to help fix their franchise based on his work on Resolute. As for a director, Tony Scott maybe...

I was aware of that, when Stuart Beattie was hired to do some rewrite he clearly kept some of stuff (like Rex turning to Commander) that was in the previous script.

After seeing what he did with Transformers I hope Bay stays far away from this franchise.

I can understand some of the criticism with Bay. Cobra Commander would probably end up as the butt of lots politically incorrect gay jokes if Bay made the film.

So I'll give a list of options:

1. McG
2. Doug Liman (Bourne Identity, Mr and Mrs Smith,)
3. Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day)
4. Sam Raimi
5. Simon West (Con Air, Tomb Raider, Exec Producer Black Hawk Down)
6. Paul Greengrass (Bourne Supremacy, Bourne Ultimatum)
7. Len Wiseman (Live Free Die Hard)
8. Paul W.S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat, AvP, Resident Evil, Deathrace)
9. Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk, Transporter, Clash of the Titans)
10. Sylvester Stallone (Rambo, The Expendables)
11. Jon Favreau
12. Nimrod Antal (Predators)

I would go with Jon Favreau, but realistically he's way to busy. Simon West, Paul Anderson, or even Stallone I think would be good picks.

Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, xXx) is another name you could throw in the mix.

Rob Cohen is busy directing xXx 3 with Vin Diesel. After watching Stealth and xXx he would not be in my top 12 picks.

Ridley Scott is real busy with Alien prequels.

Joss Whedon is busy on The Avengers.

I would add Kenneth Branagh (Thor), his schedule is free.

Leterrier and Wiseman would actually be really good choices, both know how to do action and mix it with good drama scene's, and this is what this franchise needs, both would be more then welcomed by me.

I think you're right. I don't think there will ever be a sequel to G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and we are more likely to see a reboot in 5-7 years.

Favreau does seem like the best option but we don't know his feelings towards G.I. Joe. The potential director, and screenwriter even, really needs to have a good feel for what G.I. Joe is. With that said, anyone who has any feel for G.I. Joe will want to do a reboot and plan it to be a trilogy or more from page one.

What I would do for a reboot:
1. more faithfulness to Hama's original series. One could still put their own personal stamp on G.I. Joe while remaining 100% in step with the already epic, original G.I. Joe.

2. More substance to the story and, if necessary, less bells and whistles.

3. This really wouldn't pertain to the writers or directors but given the money, I go balls-out with the world on the line in a 101% viral campaign.

I wouldn't cast an actor as Cobra Commander who would someday get into politics, I get a current U.S. Politician to become Cobra Commander and even parlay that into his re-election campaign.

I'd run Cobra Public Service Announcements in place of regular Service Announcements on any and all television networks.

Maybe the movie isn't even about G.I. Joe anymore and it becomes more of a reality-series of Cobra's plans to rule the world. Thus - the COBRA NETWORK is born and goes on the air in 2013.

The end is near, the game is over...

COOOOOOBRAAAAAA!!!!!!
