Songs: The Original Vs. The Cover

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes covers > all the originals :woot:

Yes. Me First are great.

As for the Mad World Cover, look up the band Evergreen Terrace. They did a CD called Writers Block where they covered:Mad World, Maniac, Smashing Pumpkins Zero, Operation Ivy Knowledge, U2 Sunday Bloody Sunday, NoFX Dying Degree, Etc

I also like Rise Against's cover of Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. [even though I hate Rise Against now. They were so good in the unraveling days...]

I recently learned that Aretha Franklin's "Respect" was actually written and recorded first by Otis Redding and her cover kicks the original's ass by far.

The Electric Six cover of Queen's "Radio Gaga" was disappointing because it's just like a straight karaoke cover, bringing nothing new, except the singer's inability to sing like Freddie Mercury.

People were talking about Chris Cornell's cover of "Billie Jean", going "Wtf?! How could he do THAT?!?"
And I said, " He'll turn it into a mournful, acoustic ballad, kind of like a bluesy Johnny Cash song."

And, I just heard it and of course I was right.

I was blown away to hear that, probably with a little digital help, Fergie can actually sing, as she did a better than karaoke version of Heart's "Barracuda", though it's still Crap City, U.S.A.

I always loved that "Vulcan" song by Snake River Conspiracy (that singer was HOT! :(), so I was checking out their cover of "How Soon Is Now" by the Smiths, as well as Tatu's cover.
They both are musical crimes.

I suppose the Violent Femmes cover of T.Rex's "Children of the Revolution" was pretty good. Haven't heard it in years. Should revisit it.

Alice Cooper doing the Beatle's "Because" as Skeletor is a mind-blower.

very scary

In Dick Valentine's defense, there really isn't ANYONE on the planet who can sing like Freddie Mercury; to the point that Queen themselves brougth in a singer that sounds nothing like him at all because they couldn't find a suitable singer who could emulate him satisfactorily. I thought Valentine did an okay job on Radio Gaga, though I would have liked to have seen them do something different with that song and restructure it, as creative as those guys are. I know the record company basically MADE them put that on their record, though, despite their wishes not to do so. So, take that for what it's worth.

On average, I often prefer the original over the cover, though there are some instances where that doesn't hold true.

I like the punky balls required to brazenly do a Queen cover when you're not a vocalist-god...IF you do something new with the music to justify it.

If you listen to "Fun it" by Queen, heh, that would've been a better cover to do.
It sounds like a Queen cover of an Elextric Six song actually.

Ev'rybody in the mornin'
Should do a good turn all right
Ev'rybody in the night time
Should have a good time all night
Now we got a movement
Don't shun it fun it
Can't you see now you're movin' free?
Get some fun join our dynasty
Can't you tell when we get it down?
You're the one you're the best in town

Well, since Halloween is tomorrow and nobody has mentioned it yet, how about this one.....

"This is Halloween" from the Nightmare Before Christmas

Original

Marilyn Manson cover

The original is gold, but I love the Manson version too and I don't usually enjoy his stuff.

Queen wrote a lot of songs with some f**ked up, humorous lyrics and themes which is, of course, the mainstay of Electric Six's songwriting approach. I was sort of surprised they chose that song out out of all the Queen songs they could have done as well. Like I said, though, I've heard that the record company basically MADE them do that song for some reason, which they resented the hell out of.

I was actually going to post this.

Here's another one where I think both the original and cover are awesome...

"Turn The Page"

Bob Seger (Original)

Metallica (Cover)

Ugh. Britney had that horrid cover of "My Prerogative", which was a great pop song before she had to go and digitize the hell out of it.

I cant find them on the net but:
The Pixies-Velouria or Weezers cover of said song.

I actually heard the Weezer version first but gotta say there is just something about the original that makes it better.

whoa! was it any good?

I'm not gonna post the videos or anything, but I think Love Rollercoaster as originally performed by the Ohio Players was a little better when covered by funk-maestros The Red Hot Chilli Peppers

It was just what you'd expect. Just him strumming an acoustic, really slow and quiet like a sad cowboy song.
It wasn't s*** and it wasn't a miracle, just a neat re-working of it for fun.

^That's what I figured . . . sounds interesting

Here we'll debate on which version of a song is better. Now, I know, many people think: "The original is always the best!" But it's not always the case...

Like our first song, Mad World.

I'm definitely going with the cover. Discuss.
Tears for Fears' version (the original) is the only version. :o

Proud Mary

Original: Credence Clearwater Revival
Cover: Ike and Tina Turner

Ike and Tina blow CCR's original away.

easy star all stars are this reggae band that covered all of Dark side of the moon as well as a Radiohead album... both were meh, but the cover of Money was very well done.

speaking of the Pixies...

Head On

Original: Jesus and Mary Chain
Cover: the Pixies

the Pixies win this one hands down.

Cash's is the most familiar, but it's not the original

Yeah, but Anita Carter's version is pretty different, stylistically, and didn't really catch on like Cash's version did. And, neither of them wrote it anyway.

agreed. Pixies version easily. Great tune. There are quite a few good covers of pixies songs on Where is my Mind?: A tribute to the Pixies. None I think that are better than the original though.

Frank Sinatra did "Something" just as good if not better than The Beatles. Same with Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life".

And Elton John kicked The Who's ass on "Pinball Wizard".
