Comedy Spaceballs Sequel from Mel Brooks and Josh Gad

The teaser was clever and Rick Moranis coming back for this gives me a little bit of hope but I'm still cautious given the track record comedy sequels have.

Mel Brooks is also going to be over 100 when this comes out which is insane to think about.

I'm kinda pumped Lewis is going to be in it. Dude was fantastic in Thunderbolts as Best Boy Bob

And Mel looked pretty good in the teaser, considering he turns 99 at the end of the Month.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Lewis Pullman will play a character named Starburst, the sun of Queen Vespa (Zuniga) and Lone Starr (Bill Pullman). Franchise newcomer Keke Palmer will play a role by the name of Destiny. The two, along with Gad, are the leads.

Starburst?!?

Oh we are sooooo back XD

Now bring this guy back:

Also I am interested in how they will pay tribute to John Candy and Joan Rivers.

So Gad is playing Barf's son isn't he?

Oh my god for heavens sake everyone stay 1.5 metres away from Mel I don’t want to think of him catching something.

The teaser was very funny by the way so I’m really excited for this

At first glance, it seems pretty obvious where Spaceballs would go next in its grand return. Since classic characters like Lone Starr (Pullman), Dark Helmet (Moranis), Queen Vespa (Daphne Zuniga), and even the legally distinct Yogurt (Brooks) are all confirmed for the new story, along with the key casting of Thunderbolts* standout Lewis Pullmanas Starr and Vespa's son, Starburst, tackling the controversial sequel trilogymakes the most sense. However, that would leave a lot of untapped potential from the prequels and the many other spin-offs from The Mandalorian to Andor. Neither Samit nor Hernandez was willing to confirm that The Force Awakens through The Rise of Skywalker were the main inspiration, but they did give fans some breadcrumbs, teasing where to look.

"It's a provocative question," the writers said. "I could point you in the direction of the teaser trailer that we released, where that gives you an indication of where our brains were." The video shared earlier this year featured a classic Star Wars opening crawl, running through the many developments of the universe since the first film, with some classic Brooksian humor. However, it also leans into the sequel trilogy more than anything, between Moranis's broken helmet and the line "The Schwartz awakens in 2027." While everything may be pointing in one direction, though, Samit and Hernandez emphasized that there's no limit to what they could parody. "I think it's fair to say that anything that has happened since the original Spaceballs is fair game."

After decades of speculation and fan wish lists, Spaceballs 2 is officially becoming a reality. Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Cinema Center for the new film Adulthood, Josh Gad revealed that the sequel to Mel Brooks’ 1987 cult classic is entering production very soon. “I can’t believe it’s actually happening. I pitched it to Mel Brooks three years ago,” Gad said. “The fact that we are at the end of pre-production… You’re the first person I’m telling this to: I’m leaving TIFF to fly to Australia to start shooting the movie.”

The fact that Australia is serving as the production hub for the long-awaited sequel was unexpected news. Gad kept further information under wraps, joking that “legal Amazon representatives” would show up if he revealed too much. What he did confirm is that the new film aims to strike a balance between sweeping location shots and carefully controlled soundstage work, just like the original.

Gad is co-writing the sequel alongside Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, with Josh Greenbaum directing. The creative team has spent months immersing themselves not only in Star Wars and broader pop culture but also in Brooks’ entire filmography. “We have gone back to rewatch every Mel Brooks movie probably five times and just study not only Spaceballs, but study what quintessentially makes a Mel movie a Mel movie,” Gad said, citing Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, The Producers, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights as touchstones.

As was emphasized by Gad, the goal is to create characters that feel as unforgettable as the films they parody. “The characters in those movies are equally iconic to the genre that they are spoofing,” he explained, pointing out that Brooks' versions of Dr. Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) and Igor (Marty Feldman) are as recognizable as Universal’s monsters themselves.

I mean, the original Spaceballs wasn’t even a direct parody of the Star Wars trilogy in terms of story. It borrowed and played with some of the iconography but not really a 1:1 like a Scary Movie to a Scream was.

So yeah, I think it might play with some of the sequel trilogy and other Star Wars related things, but story wise will probably just be its own thing.

Starburst?!?

Oh we are sooooo back XD
So, I’m guessing he’s the Kylo Ren expy? That’s going to fun.

I’m picturing him raging out and doing all of the temper tantrums and its already making me laugh. I can see a scene where he’s just throwing a fit and destroying one of the rooms but he just continues and breaks through the set background, goes out onto the sound stage and then onto the backlot where he just keeps destroying things and causing mayhem.

And I’m guessing Keke Palmer’s Destiny is probably the Rey stand-in? I can see her bringing that Cleavon Little as Bart from “Blazing Saddles” energy. She has great comedic chops so I know she’ll be right at home in this.

Hopefully this revives Moranis acting career, because he's an actor I want to see be a regular in Wes Anderson movies.

Since I think Josh Gad's character will be related to Barf, I think they cast another fairly known actress to play a robot related to Dot. It might be later on in the process if it's just voice work.

Wait Lewis Pullman and Keke Palmer are in this? Not to mention the return of the legendary Rick Moranis? Okay that gets my attentions big time. Huge fan of the original but was worried they would ruin this.
