SPARTACUS: War of the Damned! Final Season!

I think getting around the language is going to be harder than censoring / cutting down the nudity and sex scenes. The f-word is used in just about every other sentence by every single character, lol.

I just finished watching this on DVD. Wow, it was a very good wrap up. I liked it better than Vengeance. War of the Damned just felt more cohesive and I was more accepting of the new Spartacus and Naevia.

With Naevia I actually wound up liking the new actress more. I thought she was pretty bad ass throughout this season. I didn't care for her death though. I thought her death was a little weak. It should've been more spectacular. I also thought that Gannicus's take down should've been better as well.

Overall though, I thought Crassus was a very good villain, more capable than Glaber. And Crassus wasn't all bad, he wasn't a caricature. Tiberius turned into quite the loathsome figure. Kore was very tragic and well played.

The guy playing Caesar reminded me of a love child between Brad Pitt and Chris Hemsworth. It took me a moment to buy him as Caesar, but ultimately I thought this take worked for this show.

The cast was good for the most part, the battles were epic, there's very little bad I have to say about it. I still like Andy Whitfield more, but Liam McIntyre gives great speeches and I liked a lot of his dialogue particularly in the series finale.

One of my quibbles was that I felt that it was becoming too much of the Gannicus show, that he was damn near untouchable, but that was tempered by the end. I was wondering for a moment though if Gannicus wasn't going to survive.

I thought Gannicus' end was pretty perfect. He was fighting for as long as he could until he was surrounded. Overall I have to say the character is pretty overrated among the fandom. I mean, I get the appeal, but he wasn't that great.

I think both Liam and Andy have their strengths and weaknesses. Liam has a really good authoritative, Shakespearean voice which is good for the speeches he had to deliver. Whereas Andy was generally more charismatic with a stronger screen presence. Its funny though, because if you watch his interviews Liam in real life is quite charming. Not sure why that didn't translate on screen.

I much prefer Cynthia Addai Robinson as Naevia. She's a far better actress, and her chemistry with Manu Bennett was intense (I think them both being method actors could be one of the reasons). So Lesley leaving actually ended up being for the better. The pedestal Lesley Ann Brandt is put on is undeserved, especially since its for superficial reasons, like her being "exotic". :whatever: And I never knew how unapologetically racist fandom could be until they replaced a racially ambiguous woman with a black woman in a TV show.

Syfy reruns start tonight. Curious to see.

Hey, I'm about to start Vengeance.

Are there any other shows that have as much gore as Spartacus does?

Yeah, I definitely think Rome could match Spartacus' penchant for violence, if not it's frequency. The thing with Spartacus was it was super violent, every single episode. Rome's violence was more spread out, although just as brutal.
