I don't think this is a question that should be asked until it actually gets to that point, but maybe we can have a little speculation.

With the reveal of Season 10 being the final for the show, I wanted to ask: how do you think Smallville will be looked at/viewed upon 5-10 years after it has ended? How will it hold up, when this show from today's standards, will be seen by the standards and viewers of tomorrow?

Let us speculate.

If Nolan's Superman is as big as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, SV will fade fast. Nolan made his Batman the foremost definitive version of this generation with the quality of those films, so let's see what happens with Superman.

Though I'm sure new viewers will discover SV through reruns and DVDs.

I think SV should be reconized as one of the imortant parts in the history of SM because lets face it the only thing that has lasted longer than SV other than the comics was the radio show which lasted from 1940-1951. I could be missing something and for those wondering I'm not counting SR as part of the SM films(1978-1987). So not only has SV ran longer than any other SM tv or movie series but it will be the longest running Sci-Fi tv show of all time considering SV should end with 218 episodes.

Well maybe not I just ran acoss the fact that Dr. Who ran for 696 episodes from1963-1989. I'm not sure if there is any other shows that have ran longer or not.

Yeah. According to all the sources, Dr. Who is the longest running Sci-Fi series.

It is impossible to top.

I wonder how long the new one will last..

As above, if Nolan's Superman is successful, then this will bring the entire Superman brand back into recognition. I think a knock-on effect will be much more syndication of Smallville around the globe - you'll probably see a lot of repeats being aired in many countries. Maybe not on the big network channels, but at least on the smaller ones or the ones with a sci-fi orientation.

As regards the perception of Smallvile and everyone's opinion on it, I don't know. I've watched every episode of Smallville right from 2001 and love the show, but I also watch Lost/Fringe/24/etc and I'm fully aware that most fans of those shows consider Smallville to be quite juvenile in comparison. Not just in the way that it's dealing with a young Clark Kent, but in the effects, stories and the Dawson's Creek style lines which sometimes utter forth from the characters. Nevertheless, Smallville has certainly been successful and it's not only the longest running Superman-related show, it's probably the longest running superhero show full stop. If Season 10 goes out on a high, I imagine this will make the entire journey of seasons 1-9 worth the effort, and most people will look back on the show fondly.

In the long run and if it ends the right way, quite possibly will be the best live action representation (along with the Donner movies) of Superman ever. Tom Welling will be known as the true successor (as he already is by many) of Christopher Reeve and the show itself will be known to have brought us many characters from the DC Universe that we wouldn't have seen otherwise. It was also the cathalyst to many of the DC movies already in development by Warner Bros.

Smallville has played a huge role for the character, and it's not one that'll fade real fast, even with a movie coming out.

In fact a movie coming out may have the added effect of giving the show much more air time.

But in time though, like all the shows about Superman, it'll fade in the eyes of the general public, but still loved by fans of the character. (such as Lois & Clark, TAS, and The Adventures of Superman.)

I would love it if some channel started to show reruns of Smallville. ABC Family used to do it for a while but then they stopped.

Smallville has done a great deal to make Superman relatable to this generation . I have a feeling that it's influence will continue to stand the test of time along with the other prominent Superman series of the ages .

Very well said, much better than I put it.

who knows it will probably still have a big following and will forever have its place in the superman legend and all that. Plus then i am sure we will see reruns live on for ages on networks like spike tv, syfy, tnt, etc...

I couldn't have said either post better. And the reason I like SV so much is because I can relate to Clark.

yea that is good thing, and i too grown up along with clark and the others past 10yrs.

The SV team fortunately has managed a comeback from regenerating each seasons to improve each seasons. Now, if the tenth season continue this progression it will actually end at top. I remember when the show went downhill, many (myself included) wanted them to end it right then and there in order to save what could be saved.
In retrospect one could now look back and say thank god they kept going.

yea its funny how the show has gone up and down through the years. But you have to give it to all invovled with smallville cause they have made it a success for a decade. That is very hard to do this day and age when shows are getting canceled after one maybe 2 seasons at best.

well once the show does end i am sure other networks will end up scoring the rights to air reruns too. Best places would be syfy channel, tnt, spike tv, my network to name a few likely choices.

It'll gain a cult following 10 years from now no doubt.

My guess is there will be a new Superman show on TV with in 10 years and it will constantly be compared to SV.

This. SV was a nice little cult show that survived on a lower tier network. Honestly, as the years pass, SV will be a nice little footnote, most noted for being the longest running version of Superman...but other than that, little else. ESPECIALLY if Nolan's Superman takes off.

I would hope TNT would air the reruns. Afterall, they do know drama...

isn't Smallville the longest running Superman show?

Yes, but it's only live action competition was the old George Reeves series, Superboy and Lois and Clark .

Superman doesn't have a future on television. The best way to do the property in live action is the films; that seems to be the direction they're going in now.

Yep.

Realistically, it will probably be remembered as much as "Lois and Clark" is now to the General Public, which is not at all... but still remembered by the hardcore fans.

Lois and Clark may have only ran four seasons, but it was on ABC; a central network. SV will run 10 seasons, but it has pretty much been in the undercurrent of the mainstream/general public; save for the first season... it has more or less gone unnoticed.

Heck, Buffy and Dawson's Creek lasted fewer years than SV but have made more memorable impacts on the mainstream/general public. Even today, they're brought up by the media, satirized etc

5-10 years from now, SV will have a small hardcore cult following of shippers and fans of the show and cast, but it will only really be remembered and brought up by fanboys who choose to remember it; same as for Superboy, Lois and Clark and other dead Superman properties.

well you never know if all the issues reguarding the copyright are settled within the next few yrs. I am sure probably by 2020s there will probably be another live action tv show on superman. But to then it will probably be just cartoons, and what ever movies do get going.
