Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Jesus, can Sony really be that dumb?

And this year’s Academy Award for Shooting Off Both Feet with One Bullet goes to...Sony Pictures!

You'd think they would have learned their damn lesson by now, but...nope...

They failed to come to an "agreement". Idk. Takes two to tango. The MCU is without criticism here either.

Disney wanted a piece from that boxoffice grosses but Sony said no.
Disney argued that Homecoming and FFH are successful cause of the MCU. Sony doesnt care.

I ve been saying for years Sony needs to go bankrupt. Their CEOs are a disgrace to the industry just like the WBs ones.

I hope the next Spider-Man film , Venom 2 and any other movie they have planned bomb hard.
They need to get what they deserve.

Wow, what does this mean for characters like Shocker and Scorpion who were already introduced and the possibility of Beetle/Mach and Joystick showing up? Does this make the possibility of the Thunderbolts in the MCU DOA?

This is WB ****ing up JL levels of idiocy. **** Sony.

I’m confident Feige and Marvel have contingencies in case Sony pulled this **** but still, it pisses me off that Sony just ****ed up the MCU’s plan for Spidey.

**** Sony.

Feige could probably get monkeys to **** a football. He's got the juice like that.

In a burlap sack no less...

Yeah...Marvel wanted to go 50/50 instead of the 5% day one money they were getting. How dare they...

Sony financed to whole movie, the 5% was a fee for service, which is the normal rate. But Disney wanted 50% without putting up any money. It would’ve been silly for Sony to agree with this.
Sony counter offered, but Disney turned it down. Disney is too greedy.

I was kind of shocked they were only getting 5% that's a RIP off

Hell, it's 5% of day one from what I understand. Apparently alot of actors take this option, and somehow it leads to a big ole payday. I don't get how getting just a chunk of day one money supposedly makes more money than the overall run, but I don't pretend to understand the ins and outs of how these contracts work.

Sony fronted the whole bill? So what did Marvel provide? Creative input?

Well, it was a nice marriage while it lasted. In a way, I'm not surprised that the egos of Sony and Disney eventually got the better of them but, it still sucks nevertheless.

Well, hopefully with enough time they'll be a James Gunn- esque reversal and the two will reconcile after the parties have cooled off.

I can a way forward without Marvel, but i'm just not confident that way includes good films. I'm afraid that path will lead to a franchise driven right back into the ground as in 2007 and 2014.

How is it a ripoff when Marvel gets 100% of the Spider-Man merchandising profits? Disney is overstepping their good faith by demanding 50-50, but Sony should counteroffer with a 15-33% percentage.

Maybe both studios are using this to drive up pressure to make a deal. I didn’t expect this to become an issue until after a third Spidey film came up.

Everybody wants that money.

I expect something to work out eventually. I think Sony and Spider-Man need Marvel/MCU a whole lot more than MCU needs him. He is a great character to have and I love Holland in the MCU, but with Spider-Man being a kid and he was so dependent on the Avengers he really isn't a leader in the MCU yet. The old guard is gone and a lot of the newer characters Marvel will be focusing on have not met him so it won't be much of impact loss. Sony won't be able to mention any of these events in the MCU which they have relied on in the other movies. Stark is his mentor and he uses a lot of Stark tech so that would be gone along with Happy appearing.

Sony should just compromise. I'm not a fan of homecoming and far from Home, but both films are Marvel Studios films more than a product of Sony Pictures. They wouldn't be as successful without Marvel Studios/Disney.

Sony is under no obligation to let Disney/Marvel have a bigger financial stake. Disney got massive upside and didn’t have to pony up the money to make the Spidey MCU films.

On the other hand, Sony should let Marvel have an increased payout as a reward for making Far From Home a $1 billion success. Just make Marvel a passive partner a la Dune or Legendary for Venom 2 and let Feige guide the Spidey movies.

Yeah that studio that employs thousands should definitely go under because they're threatening to pull a toy out of your fictional too box here. That's not a sociopathic point of view at all.

Sony took Venom to 856 mil WW without their help.

I wouldn't saw that's entirely accurate. The whole talk about Venom possibly being in the MCU was a driving point, intentional or not, to get fans to see the movie. Also, aren't there reports that Kevin Feige secretly worked on Venom?

What Sony should do is back it up. If they made good or successful films in the last decade and weren't on a sliding downward scale, they wouldn't have needed Marvel in the first place. If they take it away and make a great Spider-Man film then the majority of people will accept it and quiet down. If they make an incredible Spider-Man film then most people won't want him to return, and shout it loudly. The MCU doesn't need Spider-Man, but a great Spider-Man franchise will stand toe-to toe with anything. We haven't got a definitive live-action franchise yet, so they have the opportunity. It would actually be cool if they created competition for the MCU. Even if I don't want him to leave.

Several of the youtube movie pundits are speculating that this is pretty much just a very public negotiation happening, and I tend to agree.

Sony making it seem like it's not as big of an issue in latest comments. But could just be damage control after stocks tanked.
