Comics Spider-man Reign

Hmm, this issue was better than the previous three but it did not rock my world.

I liked the ending w/ Spidey leading the symbiote swaths atop the skyscraper to their unwitting doom.
I also liked the detailing of Venom’s motivations, that was cool.
The art was great as usual, and I liked the big throw down finale but Spider-man killing his enemies?
That did not wash w/ me.

As for the explosion at the end, I did not see a web line heading out from the building so how exactly did Spidey pull off not dieing? Was the device not button activated? …

Once I saw the panel w/ the blast I respected KA’s choice to kill web head rather than keep him around as an out-of-retirement-superhero-with-an-agenda figure. Killing Spidey would separate him from Bats at the end of DKR in this respect and also rule out any questionable sequel.
… well, that’s what I thought when I first saw the page…

Very difficult to see how he could have survived the explosion. I can understand him being reckless with the lives of the sinner six though - he didn't out and out kill them although it's fair to say they were pretty much left for dead - i think once you reach that age, and your that out of it, his only chance against the odds is to be as brutally effective as possible - if that means some wind up dead so be it. oh yeah i forgot about the explosion - given all the symbiots otherwise feasting on the city and given his inability due to age i don't blame him.

Personally, I thought the ending where Peter is alive, and back to being a costumed crime fighter, I thought that was setting it apart from Dark KNight Returns.

In the ending of DKR, Bruce and his little group of fledglings go underground, to prepare for the day when they will emerge, Peter is staying above ground, and facing his foes head-on, as opposed to going into hiding.

Peter decides to fight the good fight and give people hope, whereas Batman decided to go into hiding and build an army, just in case the world ever needed to be saved from itself.

As for the killing aspect, would say that Peter had little or no choice at the time. He pretty much figured that he could take his time and save the Sinner Six, costing countless human lives in the process, or he could bust his ass to take out the ones responsible for everything and save the city. I'd say he made the right choice.

what i don't get is what was the flashback about near the end of the first issue - he appears for the first time, beats up reign members then suddenly he's in the red and blue's a tosses a thug from a roof to the ground below. first time i read it i thought that was actually happening, but obviously it can't be seeing as he was in differen't clothes, not up high, and the background was white... ??

i have two copies of ish one with the varient covers... both first printing. not selling..

lol?

Finally read issue 4. Loved it. Fantastic wrap up to this mini. First Spider-Man title I have thoroughly enjoyed in a long time. Andrews is a fantastic writer and artist, IMO.

Doc Ock and Sandman were the best used villains in this series, too.

no thoughts on how they handled venom ock?

Well, it wasn't actually Eddie Brock himself. Just the symbiote. Which was a bit of a disappointment. I would like to have seen how time treated Brock. Both mentally and physically.

That said, the symbiotes were cool and all, but it wasn't anything too deep. They just felt angry for Spidey rejecting them and leaving them.

With Ock and Sandman, we got a bit more. Especially with Ock. Not only was he a corpse being carried by his pre-programmed tentacles, but he was not doing what seemed like the obvious, trying to kill Spidey. He was trying to reignite the age of the super powered beings. Since he and Spidey were made from radioactive accidents, he used Spidey to do it.

And the Sandman/daughter thing was a neat touch. A movie rip off, but still a neat touch. Sandman doesn't get much character development like that.

actually that is wahts happening. the first imprints were misprinted. the other imprints were corrected though...

similar to ultiamte spider-man, where bagley drew venom with the big spider symbol on his chest and it also appears in some panels but this was later corrected...

i liked that they managed to keep in venom's chracter as far as his motives go. cleansing the city better than spidey ever could in his opinion. he kinda had brock's resonating motives while keeping (i forget his name) the mayor's motives, (which happened to be the same as venom's). made sense after i tought about it for a bit.

was a very good story.
wasnt epic. but then again neither was DKR and people want to have sex with that book :o

So he really through the reign guy off the building? seems odd that he was on ground level then he's suddenly on the top of a building and then ground level again. Maybe the misprints will be worth something? He really did alot of killing in this series then...

I think i'll have to get the hardcover.

£9 wasted.

Well, I enjoyed reading them. Good relief after my exam results day.

it's funny, I managed to get a 1st print Cap 25 yesterday...but not Reign 1.

Learning curve, I guess.

Also, to anyone who bought both printings of the first issue...

Did you notice that they removed Peter's winky from the second printing!? :wow: :woot: lol

I finally read the last two issues today. I think they were way better than the first two, they really made the mini for me. I'm kinda disappointed Ock wasn't shown more, and still wonder who the fat guy in issue #1 was supposed to be, but it was a satisfying conclusion.

Great ending. I was disappointed we didn't learn who the mayor's "dinner guest" was from issue 1, but other than that a satisfactory story. Good from beginning to end with a great finish. And I thought the girl's character arc and how it connected to sandman was the best part. Venom finally done justice as a good villain for the first time in over a decade.

Pretty damn good. Hope there is no sequel though.

i think it was pretty obvious that it was kingpin

All I gotta say is that I'm extremely pleased that I have a copy of Spider-Man Reign # 1 with him in the black costume. Yay for me!

One of the lucky [smart?] ones I guess.

I, on the other hand...

Having ALREADY bought the 3/4 issues, have to buy the trade because of the lack of 1's.

This has pissed me off, no end.

Yeah, sorry...I had to rub it in for my own selfish purposes. You know how it is.

Do you have an coventions coming to your area soon? Granted the price will probably be jacked up on it but usually at conventions you can find a lot of rare stuff, especially since Reign is still fairly new.

The big yearly Pittsburgh Comic Con is coming next month and I'm really looking forward to it so I can snag some rare stuff I forgot to snag last year. :o

I have the Black costume variant # 1 too. ;)

I really enjoyed it. I'm assuming the dinner guest was Kingpin, but the fact that he threw it in there meant that he should have made it a bit more obvious. I really enjoyed almost everything in that book except that they made sure it looked like there was no way that Peter would survive only to have him live through it.

Yeah, I got the #1 Black Variant.

Guess I could have picked up a few, I anticipaited that it would be a little hot, I was(and am still) just not that fussed though.

I remember when ASM Vol2 #36 came out. I knew that was gonna be WAY hot so I picked up 3.
Still got em all but I wish I 'd picked up more than that now.

I'm not THAT fussed on spending more on Reign HC.

I've gotten over it, so to speak.

I'm just happy i'm going to get a really, really really well written/drawn Spider-Man story [albeit for the 2nd time...but hey ho!].

It's a good story....i'm glad i'm going to experience it in it's entirety. :yay:

I'm not about to spend MORE money buying the trade when I have 3/4 issues. Getting 1 isn't THAT big of a deal to me.

I thought of that, too.

What can I say? I'm a completest when it comes to these things. It's really been the only series [apart from CW] that i've wanted to collect.

O_o
