A "Spiderman suit" that allows the wearer to scale vertical walls just like the fictional superhero could one day be a reality.

Have your say: What would you use a Spiderman suit for?

Geckos have the ability to stick to vertical surfaces

Insects, spiders and geckos all have tiny hairs on their feet that set up weak attractions called van der Waals forces between molecules that are very close together.

This microscopic Velcro can cling to smooth surfaces yet is easy to detach.

Italian scientists have calculated how sufficient stickiness could be generated in the same way to support a human being's body weight. They believe microscopic hollow structures called carbon nanotubes could theoretically be used to make the idea work.

Prof Nicola Pugno, from the Polytechnic of Turin, said: "It may not be long before we are seeing people climbing up the Empire State Building with nothing but sticky shoes and gloves to support them."

And the wonderful debate about how scientists are prioritizing themselves begin anew in 3...2...1...

Thanks lot science, now thousands upon thousands of nerds will die due your death suit. I hope it was worth it.

This is old info, I saw something about this on the Discover channel. But the critics are one hundred percent right. It's not like scientists are busy with things like...

  1. Clean and efficient energy sources
  2. Finding out how to feed six billion people with out killing the planet
  3. Curing cancer
  4. Working on preventing natural disasters.

I want to buy one and be a crime-fighter in New York City!!!! :)

As long as these so-called "critics"...

  • ...aren't spending every disposable income they have towards these "priority causes"...
  • ...riding a scooter to work (the "priority" is getting there, not how you get there)...
  • ...aren't trying to get into a field that can contribute to these "priorities"...
...they can't talk.

Every convenience we have, including the server this site is hosted on, started with someone who didn't use his or her intellect towards one of the "priorities" you mentioned. Have you even considered that there might be practical applications for this, such as a firefighter tool for saving people from burning structures?

Even something as seemingly superfluous as plastic surgery can assist a burnt child become a better-functioning member of society.

All this "high-and-mighty" haughtiness I've read in here is such crap, it's laughable. If you're so worried about it, donate your computer's processing power towards all the research you mentioned, and quit wasting yours and our time by posting about it.

*The previous post was not all directed towards you, but also towards some of the more "righteous" people whose musings I have read in here.
