Spielberg vs Scorsese

I saw the same poll in a french movie forum. Scorsese won.

They are euro snobs and ya'll are popcorn snobs. Lawd.

Still undecided on this one. Can we keep both? :csad:

Not if you want to play this game. Go out into the real world where they exist, but not in here. You must make a choice, like Meryl Streep did.

**** it then, I'll go with Scorsese.

Spielberg. Pre-Schiendler's List, he was the epitome of escapism.

Have to go with Marty. A world without Spielberg movies is a sad thought though.

Spielberg, by a hair. I hated having to pick though :csad: :oldrazz:

Spielberg is more apt to make films I'd be interested in seeing. Scorsese's films tend to hit better when he chooses a subject that interests me but all too often many of his films simply don't interest me at all(Hugo, that mental patient movie, Mr. Saturday Night, Raging Bull, etc.). I'm only interested in his crime movies really(Goodfellas, Casino, Wolf of Wall St., The Departed, etc.) but in that genre he has no equal. But Spielberg does have my absolute favorite movie of all time in his corner(Jaws) so I guess I'll give it to him.

Spielberg...just. Purely on the basis his films 'speak' to me more, and E.T. is a major fave of mine, defined me when I was 7 when I saw that at the cinema, emotionally hit me with the themes and has never left me.

The correct answer is Martin Scorsese. It's been quite some time since we've gotten a great Spielberg flick.

I thought Lincoln was pretty great and that wasn't so long ago.

I think most people consider that film soulless Oscar bait. Daniel Day-Lewis was strong as usual, though.

I always love the 'most people' argument. It's easy to dish out and can't really be proven at all. Maybe YOU didn't like it but that's another story altogether. Judging purely from the critics(which I know, doesn't prove anything either) it seems that most people liked it.

Scorsese and, as much as I love Spielberg, it's not even close.

I wonder what cinema would be like if neither of these guys ever existed. It'd be a lot different thats for sure.

One is America's best director and the other is America's most successful director. Yes, I'd say so. Both have inspired pretty much every American director born after 1970.

Soderbergh took Raiders and made it silent in black n white, which also includes a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Absolutely fantastic.

I wonder how many in this thread have watched Scorsese work. I am not just talking the more popular ones. Stuff like Age of Innocence, After Hours, The King of Comedy, etc. His range is unparalleled. Even his documentaries are fantastic. I love Spielberg, but there is Marty and then there is everyone else.

When I think about who the more talented filmmaker is, I go with Scorsese. But when I try to imagine cinema without the work of either of these two, Spielberg's films would feel like the greater loss to me. So he got my vote.

Maybe we have and it's just that art is subjective?

Art being subjective isn't what I was talking about. I am talking about range. Scorsese made a better Spielberg movie then Spielberg has in 22 years. I get going for the crowd pleaser. I am not begrudging anyone their vote. Spielberg has made some of my absolute favorite films. But I don't think it is any coincidence that Scorsese is seen in the light that he is by other pros. Or that he is still breaking new ground for himself and making incredible films in his later years.
