Splice...genetics gone wild from the director of "Cube"

I'll just say this and this isn't a diss against you Figs but just the remake haters.

Okay, people ***** and complain about no original movies and how everything is remake or sequel. Well here is your chance to stand up and show the movie studios what you want. If you want new stuff in the future show them and support stuff like this.

But hey, that's just me I have no problem, with remakes, but I see people here crying about them all the time, so do something and here is a chance! Even if you don't like the reviews, go and support it and give it a chance.

I know you said it's not against me but just to point out, I actually have liked a few of the modern remakes. I love original/new horror films, you know I liked that movie Splinter. It's just that i'm on the fence with this particular film. Depending on the money situation I might just go see a matinee. Going to wait for a few more reviews though.

I liked splinter aswell. Even if you see it at a matinee it's counting for something.

But again WB sucks for the genre. So either way it seems like a win/loss situation. LOL.

Same here.

My sister's boyfriend who moved to CA from Florida recently said that he saw it early at one of Florida's film festivals. He says the ending sucks bigtime.
something about it getting way too sappy with their love for the creature
I don't want to read the spoilers, but can you delve more into what precisely is wrong? Is it like a Deus ex Machina type scenario?

I've only seen Natali's Cube, and while conceptually pretty intriguing, I found the execution to be ridiculously off-putting. By the time the credits rolled, I couldn't help but feel what the entire point of that film was. But I digress. Splice reminds me of Species, but I haven't seen that movie anyway so this'll still come off as really original to me. I'm crossing my fingers he doesn't muck it up though.

I liked the original Cube, and this movie looks intriguing from the previews. I may see it, I'm on the fence about seeing it theatrically at this time (due to the obscene ticket prices nowadays).

Crook, i'm not even sure why I put that in spoilers since it's not a spoiler really. Basically what I heard is that it gets sappy/caring at the end. For all I know it could actually be pretty good and it might have just not been my sisters bf's kind of thing. I'm still pretty interested in it though.

As for Cube, I love that movie. I can understand someone wondering what the hell the point of it was but I loved it because it was quite different and it made me think what or who made that torture device and what for exactly.

Finally, somebody out there created a sci-fi chick that can not only shave her own head with her razor-equipped tail, but give handjobs to four guys at the same time. Creepy but hey, if a guy's willing to fantasize about cartoon chicks, Dren, here, should increase lotion sales among male youths for weeks. Oh, and food for thought, Dren spelled backwards is....NERD!!!!!

-so sayeth the mastermind-

Silver: What Changes Were Made to Splice?

For a film like Splice to be acquired by a major studio is unusual. And you'll see what I mean when the film opens on June 4. Pushing buttons and taking the creature feature into surreal territory, Vincenzo Natali's film divided Sundance audiences; it found a champion in producer Joel Silver, however.

When Splice was picked by Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment, Natali told the press he was going back into the editing room to work on the film some more.

"It was minimal stuff," Silver clarified over the weekend at a press junket. "He had finished the movie quickly to get it ready for the festival and he wanted to finish some stuff and finish it properly. We made a few changes and it's indistinguishable from what was shown at Sundance. It's a little shorter and we tweaked a few things."

Silver asserts nothing was changed for the MPAA and that an R rating was quickly given. Stay tuned for more coverage next week!

i can't believe this movie is finally coming out, i first saw a still from this flick in october of 06 when I first got Entertainment Weekly. all i can say is, for better or for worse, its about time.

speaking of Cube...was the sequel lame? And why?

The sequel and prequel were alright but I think the first was better because it was unique and it lost that wonder and originality for the other two films. That's how I feel about Transformers 2, people say the only good thing about that film was the action but the transformations and seeing these guys come to life and beat on each other lost it's "magic" and wonder after the first.

The second Cube also got a little weird at times with some of the times like one that sped up time while you were in there and one that slowed time down. I haven't watched it in quite sometime so I don't recall all of it's flaws right now.

Cube 2 was ok.. expanded it a bit but more of the same really and not as good as Cube IMO. Cube Zero was a bit of a waste though, really...

So what are these Cube movies about? I've seen the box many a time when i've gone to rent a movie.

Cube is about 5 or 6 strangers (I don't recall how many exactly) who wake up inside rooms with doors on every face and no memory of how they got there. Some rooms are trapped and some aren't. And they have to traverse the giant cube of interchanging rooms to find the exit and try work out why they are there. It's good, I reccomend it.

Cube 2 is pretty much the same but tries to expand on the idea of what the Cube is a bit.

Cube Zero is a prequel from the perspective of 2 guys 'controlling' the Cube.

Rent the first one, actually, buy it. I know you buy some random DTV horror movies so I recommend just buying this one, I think you'll like it.

A bunch of people wake up in these square rooms and end up meeting with each other. Some rooms are safe while others have traps. All the rooms form one giant cube as well.

I'll have to rent it sometime, seeing how I don't really have much money to buy any kind of movies at the moment.

Good news for anyone on the Orlando Area.

Free 'Splice' Screening in Orlando!

Premiering at Sundance earlier this year, Vincenzo Natali's Splice (clips) has been a much-talked about film, with its unorthodox approach to crafting a Frankenstein tale. And if you live in the Orlando area, you can catch it for free. The screening is going to take place on Tuesday, June 1 at 7:30 PM at Regal Winter Park. To win 1 of 100 passes (good for 2 people each), all you have to do is show up at the theatre on the day of the screening at 6 PM, when we will be on hand to give out the passes.

"Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they secretly conduct their own experiments. The result is Dren, an amazing, strangely beautiful creature that exceeds their wildest dreams, until she threatens to become their worst nightmare."

I want to see this movie. It looks different & I love sci-fi.

speaking of Cube...was the sequel lame? And why?

I liked all the cubes, but the 1st was the best because it was a new & fresh idea. The remakes attempted to try & reinvent the premise.

The 2nd was a hyper cube, using quantum physics to create the dangers.

The 3rd was more of a prequel to the 1st. So you saw some of the inner workings.

The second Cube also got a little weird at times with some of the times like one that sped up time while you were in there and one that slowed time down. I haven't watched it in quite sometime so I don't recall all of it's flaws right now.
I watched it again a couple of months ago. The flaws mostly seemed to be regarding that guy who seemed to travel in speed up mode more rapidly than everyone else. It was biazarre and
how come he never had any blood on him due to his escapades.

So i saw a screening of Splice yesterday. Now prior to going into the theater everyone was pumped and i heard people mention how stoked and excited they were to see this. I too felt like i was in for a nice scifi ride. Once in the theater the WB reps mentioned that since the movie was digital, it had a timer to when the movie had to be started and well they missed it so they delayed us a bit. During this time everyone was cheering, clapping, and just being silly ready to have a good time. I mention this because of the feeling we had before the film and after the film was COMPLETELY different. Note it was a very diverse crowd and had two elderly people sitting next to me.

The first part of the movie was hard to get into and the characters seemed fake. But once it picks up your looking forward to where its gonna take you but that's about as good as it gets. After that it gets VERY akward. It is not a horror flick which i was hoping to go see. Its hard to give details as mentioned in some reviews but all i can really remember is how weird it made me feel. I felt bad for the elderly people next to me because i could tell they didnt want to be there. I myself turned to my friend next to me and asked "what are we watching". After certain scenes you just lose that suspense of disbelief the film had because your just thinking "what the bleep?". Some even started yelling out stuff for comedic relief due to the awkwardness and alot of nervous laughing went on. I am very surprised WB or any studio for that matter would pick up this film because it does push the limits and buttons but its buttons that probably shouldnt have been pushed. It would have been better as a short film but in the trailers they sell it as somethings its not and I dont think people will be pleased. Either you love it or hate it depending on your taste. It had its good laughs though but everyone walked away talking about how they felt weird and alot of the GA didnt like it at all.

so how gory will this be?
It is not that gory. I just remember like one seen being gory.

I'm seeing this movie fo sho!

I'm gonna see this and Get him to the geek in the same day, as a double feature.

Well, Spyder, though they do seem to marketing this as a horror movie I still plan to go in expecting a sci-fi movie first and foremost, so that aspect will be fine to me. Not to sound negative, but I really don't understand what you're trying to say about the awkwardness and such? Is it the apparent sexual aspects of the Dren and such that we've been hearing about that unsettled you and the audience so much? I appreciate that you didn't use any spoilers, but it's kind of vague as to what you exactly found wrong with the movie.

I think were be getting more horror and a sci-fi movie.

and like you said in the thing, older people might not get movies and get turned off by those. Cause I mean i doubt a 60 year old would like a Jason or NOES movie. LOL.

and it all boils down to what makes you uncomfortable, others aren't while others might.
