Contrasting with big Hollywood superhero movies hyped at Comic-Con International, Super director James Gunn took over Hall H on Friday to present a DIY man-in-tights character that would have fit right in with the cosplaying fanboys trawling the convention center corridors.
Joining Gunn (Slither) at the panel in San Diego was Rainn Wilson (The Office), who stars as Frank Darbo, a downtrodden man who recruits a psychotic teenager and dresses up in red tights to become The Crimson Bolt. The wannabe hero then sets out to win back his wife from a glamorous drug dealer.
Wilsons Super co-stars Ellen Page (Inception), Nathan Fillion (Firefly) and Michael Rooker (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) also took questions from the audience in support of the project, which is now in post-production.
With questions of distribution and marketing yet to be resolved, producer Miranda Bailey says, James has a ton of fans who attend Comic-Con and it just seemed like a great way to show them a taste of Super. Nathan Fillion, who plays The Holy Avenger in the film, also has a ton of geeks who love him, so we all decided to go down and join the fun.
Super promises a fresh spin on the blockbuster-style action, Bailey said in an e-mail to Wired.com. Even though this film is about Rainn Wilsons character becoming a superhero of sorts, it is by far not a Hollywood superhero movie. James has a sick mind and has written a hilarious, dark yet moving film.
Rainn Wilson is hilarious and the rest of the cast looks good too, this is kinda like Defendor but with a bigger budget.
