Contrasting with big Hollywood superhero movies hyped at Comic-Con International, Super director James Gunn took over Hall H on Friday to present a DIY man-in-tights character that would have fit right in with the cosplaying fanboys trawling the convention center corridors.

Joining Gunn (Slither) at the panel in San Diego was Rainn Wilson (The Office), who stars as Frank D’arbo, a downtrodden man who recruits a psychotic teenager and dresses up in red tights to become The Crimson Bolt. The wannabe hero then sets out to win back his wife from a glamorous drug dealer.

Wilson’s Super co-stars Ellen Page (Inception), Nathan Fillion (Firefly) and Michael Rooker (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) also took questions from the audience in support of the project, which is now in post-production.

With questions of distribution and marketing yet to be resolved, producer Miranda Bailey says, “James has a ton of fans who attend Comic-Con and it just seemed like a great way to show them a taste of Super. Nathan Fillion, who plays The Holy Avenger in the film, also has a ton of geeks who love him, so we all decided to go down and join the fun. ”

Super promises a fresh spin on the blockbuster-style action, Bailey said in an e-mail to Wired.com. “Even though this film is about Rainn Wilson’s character becoming a superhero of sorts, it is by far not a Hollywood superhero movie. James has a sick mind and has written a hilarious, dark yet moving film.”

Rainn Wilson is hilarious and the rest of the cast looks good too, this is kinda like Defendor but with a bigger budget.

Apparently Rob Zombie is playing God in this. I'm interested lol

Slither was a vastly under-rated horror/comedy, looking forward to this.

I went to a panel with James Gunn and saw the trailer. He's a funny dude.

Rainn Wilson is great and Ellen Page is in this so I can't wait. It looks great. AND the notion that Rob Zombie is playing God makes me crazy giddy

Also, may I point out that James (in the Troma panel at Comic Con) was very inspirational.

He had a super LOW budget but he managed to get Rain, Ellen, Rob Zombie, Kevin Bacon, Liv Tyler, & Nathan Fillion and the rest of the cast. Because it's a good script and all of the actors believed in it. That's magic right there.

Comingsoon.net has a great clip but there's swearing so I can't post the link.

I love Ellen Page so I'll definitely be seeing this.

there's a great interview with the director on the front page. i'll be seeing this.

Super looks entertaining in a morbid way. On the surface it appears to have a lot of similarities to Kick-Ass (including a foul-mouthed, psychotic sidekick in the fold) but while the premises may be similar, the execution seems very different.

While Kick-Ass is an overly slick film, this looks like a rough-crude, dirty minded indie comedy. In short like Slither with superheroes. Albeit the reviews I hear from TIFF is that it is even cruder and more perverse.

The rumors I'm hearing about what Ellen Page's character does in this movie will be worth the price of admission alone. Check out the clip that is online for a hint of what I think is to come.

Should be worth a very, darkly funny viewing. Looking forward.

Can anyone find the clip that aired during the Scream Awards on Spike?

the Scream awards clip was cool. I can tell this is gonna be one crazy violent film.

The clip was funny but also, it was kinda wrong. Maybe it's my age, but I'm not that old either.h

But I don't understand Rainn Wilson's outrage in the clip though. Was the guy meeting up with the girl in line and she was saving him the spot? Everyone does it.

I don't get it. I don't know if it's worth a split skull and a beaten woman. I understand the 'shock' value, but even then, the 'shock' has to be done right. Here it's just gratuitous.

I think part of the point is that Rainn Wilson's character was clearly over-reacting. He took something trivial and blew it out of proportion- which I think is the point of the scene.

I have a theory on why the movie is called 'Super'.

I could be that his character thinks he's a Superhero, but in actuality, he's the opposite.

This looked dumb at the Scream awards. :(

And Rainn Wilson is the most annoying thing to come from The Office.

This looks extremely similar to kick-ass. Thats all I'm saying :o

Yeah this movie just looks bad.
