Teen strangles 10 year old brother, inspired by Dexter

Dexter ended up killing his shrink...who was in fact a serial killer himself.

Do you really think seeing a shrink will help this kid though.

It's possible, though I think it more likely this kid could be of use to us. Think of it in this way, maybe he has some brain chemical imbalance or some genetic cue that made him bat**** crazy. Now if you just kill him or abandon him to a prison system you never find out much more, but if you study him maybe you actually save some group of brothers in the future?

I look at it in this way. Say some dude got an incurable disease that's contagious. Now you can't let that person just roam the streets cause others would get hurt. But just killing him is unfair (cause it wasn't his fault he was born screwed up) and stupid (cause you'll never learn more about the disease). The smart and right thing to do is to isolate and study and hopefully learn enough to find some type of a cure. Mental diseases are really not different in terms of theory and practice.

I'm not someone that thinks all evil isn't the fault of the perp, but in this case it really doesn't seem to be. The kid killed his brother for no reason, he said it felt like satisfying his hunger. He has no history of being anything other than a good kid. He seemed happy after the act with no remorse, and then later he just turned himself in. These are the actions of the insane not a criminal. Criminals gain something from their crime, they feel somewhat guilty or at least paranoid after the act and they try to avoid being caught.

Not sure how that kid can see Dexter, because it's not appropriate for his age group.

How is Dexter not appropriate for a 17 year old? 17 is when you can see R rated movies by yourself.

Did you said that he just became acquainted with Dexter recently? I thought that he had watched Dexter for awhile, and that in part fueled his crazy notion that he should be like Dexter (who ironically is a serial killer who preys on other murderers, and not innocent 10-year-olds).

If the kid wanted to kill someone he should of done the world a favour and killed himself. Little wannbe Patrick Bateman/Dexter loser.

Yeah 'cause committing a state sanctioned murder will totally "make things right". Hell, it'll even assuage the parents grief and bring back their dead child!

Oh, wait...no it won't.

:whatever:
Just because somebody has a different opion then you doesn't make him stupid.
BTW, I beleive that ALL sane, resonsiple, Murderers over the age of 16 should be put to death. Harsh crimes call for scrit measures.

Thank you.

People are so quick to classify things as rights when they are actually privileges. Like having children.

People like the United Nations? The Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees the "right to life, liberty, and security of persons" in Article 3. You'll find the same stipulation in the constitution of almost every democratic nation. A government may attempt to justify an infringement of the right (in the case of the death penalty, the right to life), but that doesn't make it a privilege. And saying that life is privilege is dangerous thinking IMO. If we were to consider life a privilege then we lessen the importance of human lives and get into tons of debates who "deserves" to live, etc. Life has to be a right because it's so fundamental to...well, everything, that we do whatever we can to protect and preserve it.

All the kid said is that he had cravings to kill, like Dexter does. The article's first paragraph and this thread's title are misleading.

Hmm did I call him stupid?

No...no I don't see that in there.

If you read the article you would see that the kid is clearly not sane.

That is something I will never understand. I do not get why these people just can't off themselves, instead of taking people with them.

Because their compulsion is to kill another living thing. Yes, they're often suicidal, but it's simply the nature of their mental illness. It is by definition irrational and illogical and should be understood as such.

Dexter is a sort of hero. Killing only those who deserve to die. This kid is a psychopath...

Dexter will live on.

Yeah. I suppose them too. I don't necessarily believe that everything the UN says is infallible.

If you take the lives of others on purpose, living is not a right for you anymore. It just makes sense to me. Live and let live. Otherwise...

Nah, there should be people like Dexter, taking out the trash....:o

I'm not being serious for all you up tight peeps. :D

Seventeen and most likely headed to prison for life. A true waste of humanity. Like someone said, some people are just evil.

Bulls***. This whole *Insert violent thing here* made me do something bad is such horse s***. This isn't even like Dexter, Dexter kills people who deserve to die. His brother did NOTHING to deserve that.

I hope this little ******* gets the death sentence. There's a 70% chance if he goes to jail & is released, he'll go ahead & kill someone else. YOU'RE OWN BROTHER!? God, I really hate humans.

Technically this is true. If you commit a crime you loose the right to liberty or life depending on where you live (whether you morally agree with losing these rights is another discussion). The law sees fit to infringe these rights. I just take issue with the idea of calling life a privilege. The word privilege connotes that we are being granted something by someone, and therefore it can be taken away. So life is granted by... the God of your choice? The government? And they can take it away? That doesn't sit well with me. Life is a right because we value it highly, and if that right is going to be infringed it should only happen in the most extreme and necessary circumstances, with a high degree of consideration.

When did he call him stupid?

So....how does that belief apply here, exactly?

I know the bleeding hearts around won't agree with me, but I'm all for the death penalty, even though Australia doesn't have it (which I think we should), because there are people who do not deserve to live. Killers, rapists, pedophiles, etc.

Totally agree. Especially on the pedophile thing. I REALLY hate pedophiles.

I'm with this guy. Anyone who takes sexual advantage of a child should be put to death on the spot. Either that, or castrated. Without any sort of anesthesia.

Dexter's a show on on a premium channel that is not suitable for children. It's never been marketed towards children, nor is it even arguable that it might have appealed to children (think joe camel). I'm pretty sure showtime issues warnings before the show to advise that it's not suitable for kids.

As someone who watches the show it's great, but highly inappropriate for a 17 year old to be watching unless mom and dad have decided they're mature enough to accept it.. Mom and Dad should have been on top of this one. Sad story.
how is it inappropriate a 17 year old can get into a R rated movie, buy M rated Video Games. 17 years old is a very appropriate age to watch Dexter. The kid is just crazy.
