Heres an article from IGN that lists their 10 trends that they feel are hurting videogames.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/944/944828p1.html

A Great Cast with a Dud Script

Unreal Engine 3 Overdose

Sequelitis

Too Human Syndrome

Production Values vs. Wii Production "Values"

Sonic and Mario Visit the Rainbow Dentist

Motion "Control"

Promises, Promises, Promises

Strong Female Lead Character = Edgy, Clever and Desirable

Casual Gaming

I can see a lot of their points in those articles, but I highly disagreed with quite a bit of what they said with 'Strong Female Lead Character = Edgy, Clever and Desirable', not all of it mind you, especially when they mentioned Alyx & The Boss who's roles were perfect and wouldn't be the same as a male character at all.

It does amount to a lot of digital T&A sometimes, but not always and in the last couple of years there as been decent progress of strong non-sexual strong female leads. I see no problem with that and I don't see how any of that is degrading in the least, as the article states.

That and the whole Promises issue was stupid. What do they expect from companies and developers when they're hyping their games.

"Oh yeah guys, we did our best, but don't expect it to be great or worth your $60. Maybe a rental, though. We hope you buy it, though."

I couldnt disagree more with so many on this list, mainly:

Unreal Engine 3 Overdose

Too Human Syndrome

Production Values vs. Wii Production "Values"

Motion "Control"

Strong Female Lead Character = Edgy, Clever and Desirable

Yea i disagree with alot on that list as well, mostly the Too Human syndrome. I do agree with the 'Production values tho, there are a TON of shoddy titles on that system, then again, i guess thats an indication of its core audience.

I think the Unreal Engine 3 looks pretty good and disagree that it makes games look very generic. Bioshock, Mass Effect, Unreal Tournament 3 and Mirrors Edge all look and feel very diffrent. It is perhaps abit over-used though.

Personally I'd like to see the Xray Engine used in more games, before, for Shadow Of Chernobyl it looked pretty dated by other engine comparisons like Source, Unreal Engine 3 and the Cryengine 2 and what-not. less than a year later with the upgrades for Clear Sky the engine looks pretty sweet at times and it's not nearly as demanding as the Cryengine 2. It also has a really good feeling of "solidity" to it and could probably be optimisted and improved even more. It's probably never giong to be widely used though or used by people at all other than Deep Silver, totally wasted if it's just giong to be 1 single game using it imo.

The Dunia engine used in farcry 2 was also pretty cool. It looked decent, had huge scale but was nowere near as demanding as Crysis. The consoles seem to handle it decent also. Be nice if some coming games in the future used it.

I really don't see the problem with the wii, I was playing with my nephew and brother the other day at bowling, boxing and some baseball game and it was pretty fun. The kid was running after a dog on the wii fit board and loving it. The controls were pretty cool imo.

Was reading the this article yesterday, Will Wright thinks it's the only proper next-gen console apparently.

Yea i think the Wii is fun, i dont really have a desire to own one, but my aunt and uncle got 2 this past christmas, one for them and one for my litte cousins and we all had fun playing, however i do think they are catering more towards a crowd that wont help games grow in the future. In other words, i think the better the Wii does and the more ppl try to imitate it, the less titles like Metal Gear Solid 4 we will get. Not saying thatll happen, but i dont want to see 3 versions of the Wii next generation.

I agree with the Too Human Syndrome. If a game developer has a big and epic idea, then they should try and get as much of it into one game as they can. If that game sells well and/or has a very positive critical reception, then they should put more of their ideas into a sequel. And if they're still not quite finished, then go ahead and make it a trilogy. Or a tetralogy. Whatever. How ever many games it takes. Just don't try and stretch and one game into three.

Of course I also agree with Casual Gaming and Motion Controls. As I'm sure most people know how I feel about this trend I won't get into a big thing here, so I'll keep it brief. I'm hoping against hope that, as ProjectPat said, we don't end up with three Wiis next generation. I want the industry and the medium to move forward, not backwards.

Unfortunately, if the Wii continues the way it is, then I suspect very heavily we may see something very much like that.

I thought it was a good article, and I especially agreed with "Too Human Syndrome." I hate it when games get announced as trilogies, because it essentially means that the developer is going to hold back on the first installment to get you to buy the sequel, and it essentially means that they don't have to give a crap telling the story until the last game. I say, if you're going to take the trouble of making a good game, then make it like it's your last. Yeah, you'll have to work harder on the sequel, but that's a given.

When you make Game X: Part 1 instead of Game X, you are basically telling the gamer "don't complain if this game feels unfinished, because we're already making the sequel to it." JUST MAKE A RUDDY GAME, and if it's GOOD, then you can start brewing ideas for a sequel. Video games are NOT movies, and no matter how closely intertwined the two mediums become, the concept of "planned trilogies" will not be able to transfer from the silver screen to game consoles without hurting the games in the process. When I pick up a game, I want to know that the developer gave it their all, and that they weren't "saving the good stuff for the sequel." If they already have good ideas and the means to put them in the game, then that's what they should do!

I agree with the majority of those, but i can´t agree with all the examples they give.

A Great Cast with a Dud Script
It´s true, more games than not have bad scripts. It´s even more of a problem when there is an amazing cast making the voices (the last Spyro crosses my mind, Elijah Wood, Gary Oldman, Christina Ricci, and, by the reviews, the game and script suck).
But on video game behalf....it´s a video game.
It´s not easy to make a good script about a character running around, alone, shooting monster and whatnot.
But, at the same time, it´s not impossible, not even close.

Unreal Engine 3 Overdose
I can´t agree with this more.
Many games are starting to look alike because of this, they are looking generic, it´s impossble to be hyped for one game that looks like a sequel to a another one with no relation.
UE 3 is the engine of this generation.
Create new engines for crying out loud!
Imagine if Microsoft had bought Epic like the rumours stated.....
Like IGN said, when every game looks like Gears of War, Gears became bland and unexciting, and the sad part, UE3 is actually amazing.

Sequelitis
Annual installment suck and are pathetic, there is no other way to put it.
Fifa, PES, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Madden, NBA, Smackdown vs Raw, NFL, Tony Hawk.....all those games should stop for at least 2 to 3 years.
Even Call of Duty is starting to fall on that category (2007 CoD4; 2008 CoD:WaW; 2009 CoD5).
That just shows that, more than ever, gaming is an industry and you make certain games because they sell, not because they re good, original or bring something fresh to the franchise.
Those games make money, and the sad part is, those games make money (meaning, people actually buy that crap).
Many of those games could have been updated with a patch or DLC, not a new game....but people still buy them.
On their behalf i have to say that, it´s better to have Need for Speed 45, than new racing ip with nothing new to offer, at least we know what NfS is.

Too Human Syndrome
I can´t agree with this one, except for the fact that it does create a needless anticipation that either ends in disappointment or "driving people insane" waiting for the continuation.
People say that video games are becaming more and more like movies, but they get mad because of an announced trilogy?
Many movies and books are trilogies, so....
And to be a trilogy is not the same as to have 3 sequels, people have to understand that; a trilogy is a story divided in 3 parts, a sequel is a follow up to something created previously, that might end on being a trilogy or not.
But to announce a trilogy in video game is a huge risk, not for the gamer, but for the parts involved and the most important thing you can lose is credibility.

Production Values vs. Wii Production "Values"
To have an article called: Ten Trends That Are Destroying Videogames, and to name this as 1 of the 10 is stupid.
The only victim here is the Wii, not videogames.
This can very well be used in my own article: "How Nintendo killed themselves by making the Wii".

Sonic and Mario Visit the Rainbow Dentist
Once again, this doesn´t destroy videogames.
IGN needed 10, they only had 8, so.....

Motion "Control"
Like the Wii production values one, this will help me on my article: "How Sony copied everyone when making the PS3".
IMO, the Sixaxis is one of most dumb moves by Sony.
Why did they felt the need to copy Nintendo, and in an extremely bad way?
Why is there a Sixaxis anyway?
Why did they felt the need to create something to be used for one or two things in a game things that could very well be made with the analogue stick.
Kudos for Microsoft for not implementing something they had no use for.
As for the Wii, well, the Wii is all about motion control, so, good or bad, that´s what it is.

Promises, Promises, Promises
This one could very well be merged to the "Too Human Syndrome" bit.
To promise something is to overhype it, and more times than not, failure will be the end of you.
On a side note: The best movie game is Riddick, but i can see X-Men Origins: Wolverine give it a run for it´s money.
Why?
Raven Soft is an amazing developer.

Strong Female Lead Character = Edgy, Clever and Desirable
Would you rather be playing with the ugliest gal on the block?
Or do you prefer men, even if they are computer generated.
I thought not....

Casual Gaming
There is nothing wrong with casual gaming, only when they dominate 70% of the market.
That still has´t happend, but i don´t see it becaming a reality; people are just overreacting.

I disagree with the "Strong Female Lead Character = Edgy, Clever, and Desirable" one. There are a couple others, but that one sticks out the most to me as being such a ridiculous double-standard. "Edgy" is pretty vague, but supposing they mean gutsy, confident, and willing to take matters into their own hands, well, that's almost every game protagonist. "Clever"? Um, yeah, I'd like all my game characters to have a brain in their heads, which sort of goes with the article's very first point about intelligent scripts.

The worst to me is "desirable." Yes, video game women are super-hot, as a general rule, unless the story specifically calls for them not to be. But have you seen most of the games on the stands with male protagonists? They're always ruggedly handsome, overly muscled supermen as well, or else they're totally anonymous dudes in power armor or spacesuits--and even then, you still generally get to see some ripply muscles straining against the suit's fabric, or at the very least they're not dumpy and average-looking. Going beyond the ridiculous double-standard, though, some of the people the article named aren't even up to the standard they set forth. Faith from Mirror's Edge, most notably, is a wiry, small-breasted woman with the personality of a wooden plank.

As for the other points, I agree with most of them, although maybe not to the extent the article puts forth. I think promising the moon is good if you can live up to it. Casual gaming doesn't really bother me because we've still got solid franchises for us more hardcore types (and I hesitate to even call myself "hardcore"). The boring sameness of a lot of games' visuals is a pet peeve of mine, but it's more to do with milking the same subject matter (space marines fighting aliens, soldiers fighting in WWII, lone badass fighting his way through evil in the near future, etc.) and being deathly afraid of any color that doesn't qualify as an earth tone. But even that latter complaint is seeing some improvement lately with Mirror's Edge, Prince of Persia, and even Gears of War 2 advancing the palette beyond just grays and browns and greens.

My one really huge pet peeve that I totally agree with the article on is the new MO of releasing half-finished games and then promising "extra" content that should've damn well been in the game already. I don't mind the patches so much, since I'm a big PC gamer and I've gotten used to dealing with a few technical snags in games.

Overall, I think games are in a pretty good spot as a whole right now. I look forward to the follow-up about the ten trends that are saving games.

what if the lead female character was chunky and had a mullet....would you buy that game??

Depends. The characters' looks very rarely factor into whether I play a game. The best character in the fantastic game that is Beyond Good and Evil is a fat, farting pig, Psychonauts is populated with freakish mutants, etc.

It is the best game tht NO ONE has every played, which I still pop into the X-Box from time to time....but I liked Double H....

Yeah, it's a shame. I bought it on Steam a while ago. I haven't finished playing it yet, but it's as good as I remembered from the first time I played.

The Gears of War story is great. THe characters are funny and you actually care what happens to them. If your gonna criticize a story crticize Halo 2/3's which barely anybody cares about...the Halos are still good games tho, mostly for multiplayer

The one I most agree with is the Too Human syndrome, mainly because it's causing games to have pretty damn short single player modes. If I'm paying $60 for a game, I want a nice long story mode, not 6-7 hours. Sick of these really short games, plus the worst offenders like Mirror's Edge, Too Human and Assasin's Creed have barely any or flat out no online multiplayer. Take a page from games like GTA, make a bigger world with a longer story, sure to create that bigger world the graphics may need to take a little bit of a hit, but I'm more than willing to sacrifice prettiness for content.

I'm hoping the next GTA main character is a woman.

Eh, I'm just the opposite. In the years since Halo: Combat Evolved, I've come to care less and less about the Halo series as games because I enjoy the fiction and characters more than the gameplay (especially the multiplayer).

Yes, I'm one of those old relics who actually enjoy the single player campaign in shooters.

We're in the same boat, then....and we're not old...we just actually care about more than just shooting our friends....

my current project is Fallout 3 because it is fantastic....
