How many Thanksgiving themed movies are there? I can think of plenty of Christmas and Halloween movies, but Turkey Day seems like a bit of an untapped holiday when it comes to film.

Off the top of my head, the only ones I can think of are Home for the Holidays and... Eli Roth’s never-actually-made horror film Thanksgiving. The former is a great film and the latter probably would have been hilarious but sadly all we have is a trailer (albeit an amazing one). I’m sure there are others though, right?

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is easily my favorite Thanksgiving movie. Classic comedy. Steve Martin's rant at the Rent-A-Car place is probably the best thing he's ever done. It is the rare hilarious comedy that really tugs at the heartstrings too. If the ending doesn't get to you, you have no soul.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a classic Thanksgiving film. An absolute favorite of mine.

Last night I also watched another one I love. Son In Law. It’s with a Pauly Shore for those who don’t know.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is truly the only Thanksgiving movie I think I have ever seen. It's a great movie regardless of the time of year.

Some have probably seen the meme by now -

Spider-Man.

Active Measures has become my new favorite Thanksgiving film. It gives all warm fuzzies inside

That and Only the Lonely proved John Candy had some range and could do serious moments too.

For the longest time, we didn't really have a movie tradition. Sometimes we'd watch something early for Christmas, or just a random favorite we all have, like Star Wars. But since it's release, we watch The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Not technically a Thanksgiving movie, but it is about family and food. It also has the perfect Thanksgiving look and coloring.

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I watched a lot of John Candy movies when I was a kid but I missed that one. I’ll have to check it out.

Alien vs Predator
Cutthroat Island
A Scanner Darkly
Wallstreet 2

These are classics among my family for Thanksgiving

Wow that list is pretty extensive but I don’t know that some of those films really count; some like Rescue Dawn and Cast Away take place over years and so I wouldn’t really consider them purely Thanksgiving movies.

Anyway, I forgot about Dutch! That was such a fun movie.

1942's 'Holiday Inn' has a Thanksgiving scene towards the end of the movie, it's not focused on it though...

Thanksgiving just isn't one of those materialistic holidays like the Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, etc. where the plot can focus on someone being selfish or whatever and then them seeing the error of their ways.

Eh, yeah it is. I mean, you could do a whole story about someone trying to cook the perfect Thanksgiving dinner to upstage the rest of his/her family (or maybe just have the character be rich and PAY others to cook this amazing meal) only to realize that the whole point of the holiday isn’t to just show everyone how awesome you are. You could also do a movie about how psycho everyone goes over Black Friday shopping, which tends to begin on Thanksgiving now.

...Or how a Turkey disenfranchised with life turns vegan for the dinner.

Same. It's in my top 20 favorite movies of all time.

Do it.

Funny you've seen Dutch before this though.
