My best guess is that the construction cranes are just a "thing" because of the first film.

That would be my guess too. If I remember correctly the "Shocker" fight images seem to be in a construction site.

This is why I'm happy to see a bigger city and Beenox are making a more accurate New York this time, because a lot of building were missing in TASM 1 game. Don't even get me started on how pathetic the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building looked.
