The Artist (2011) - A silent film!

This looks to be a masterpiece! Won the Cannes Festival award for lead actor and it looks to be a major Oscar player.

I've fixed the embed link for the video.

I was excited for this ever since I read what the movie is about and hearing the great reception at Cannes doesn't hurt either.

I've been hearing about this for awhile.I'm interested.

I'm all over this.

I found out about this a couple of weeks ago and fell inlove with it :D I really hope this goes up on my cinema - looks fantastic!

Also, everyone must watch the OSS-117 movies that the boys behind this one (director and star) made -> think Austin Powers with style.

Well time to watch everything by these guys immediately. Also, in the OSS-117 trailer, the lead actor has a great Animated Series style Joker face, build, and laugh.

I think it's incredibly ambitious to make this type of film in this day and age. So needless to say, I'm interested to see this.

I heard about this film a while back an it immediately grabbed my attention. Very bold move and one judging from what I've heard might pay off around awards season. I wonder if there will be a novelty factor to it.

If it's as good as people are saying it is, no doubt the Academy will eat it up.

I wonder how much of that would be down to it harkening back to the ol' days as it were.

I'm sure nostalgia will factor into it quite a bit.

Which isn't a bad thing, mind you. But being a good film plus AND having that novelty factor would make it a force to be reckoned with.

I bet this is the movie to beat for Best Picture.
Easily the front-runner at the Oscars.

I'd say the early contenders right now are among these:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Artist
The Ides of March
J. Edgar
A Dangerous Method
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
War Horse

You are obviously not following the festivals news. A Dangerous Method was a bit of a disappointment and the critics are saying that it is out of the BP contention.

And as of now The Descendants is the movie to beat as it is the only one that is a lock for a nomination as of now.

On topic:

As of now the movie has a really good chances for those nominations:

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Original Screenplay
Best Actor
Best Cinematography
Best Score
Best Art Direction
Best Costume Design

I'd put money on it that no matter how good Dragon Tattoo is it will not get a look in.

This looks awesome! Knowing my luck though I bet I'll sit next to someone who yells "THIS IS BORING! WHY WON'T THEY TALK" and then just cause trouble for the rest of the movie.

Sad to say but I guess I'll have to wait for the blu ray.

Very interesting year in film: I've never seen so many high-concept and/or films with surrealist elements getting so much buzz.

I'm gonna have to agree with jmc. I'll be quite surprised if The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo gets in. Same goes for Shame.

In my opinion, these are safe bets:

J. Edgar
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
The Artist
A Dangerous Method
War Horse
The Descendants

I would say Dragon Tattoo has a really good chance. Fincher's been nominated the past two movies he's directed, and even though this one seems to be more in vein with Se7en or Fight Club, I think it has a strong chance. I think Craig and Mara have really strong chances, assuming all goes well, of getting a nomination each.

I don't think Dangerous Method will get a nomination, not after the bad buzz at Venice. I think J. Edgar, Tinker Tailor, Dragon Tattoo, Descendants, Artist, and War Horse have the biggest chances right now with Artist, Tinker Tailor, and Descendants being the front funner at the moment.

I'd say Help, Warrior, Ides of March, Moneyball are the ones hovering on the outside of the nomination pool right now.

oscar bait...Its got it by the hook and will snatch it away from some big films i bet.

You know why it won't get a look in? It's too bleak.

Yeah, I don't think Dragon Tattoo has much chance, unless it's a giant hit, both critically and commercially, and maybe not even then.

The Artist definitely looks interesting, though I hear from the reviews that the main disappointment being voiced is that the story is pretty shoestring (basically just A Star Is Born with [BLACKOUT]a happy ending[/BLACKOUT]).
