OK, I've seen the film a couple of times now, and I feel more prepared to answer. I am still a little unsure where to rank AoU, but I watched Movie Bob's review and his thought's seem to reflect mine when he talked about the comparison between Godfather and Godfather pt.2. The Godfather is a timeless classic and was a milestone in the movie industry, but The Godfather pt. 2 was the better story. That's how I feel here.

Avengers is a game changing classic film that will be remembered for all time. There are those certain films that people relate to life events, where they were, what they were doing, what was going on in the world. Avengers is that film for this newest generation.

Age of Ultron is the better story though, and a better representation of what the Avengers were in the comics. Avengers 1 there were all these influences of how Shield formed things under Fury's influence. Sure Fury is in this film and has a key moment, but this is all about the Avengers. Tony financing the team and using Avengers Tower as their base. Cap leading the team, with a very classic lineup (only minus Wasp and Ant-Man). This film just felt more like the Avengers I knew from the comics. The story was larger, with them globe trotting, not just stuck in New York.

Loki was a great choice for the first film, since that was the first enemy they faced in the comics, but Ultron is the Avengers' nemesis, and while they didn't have Hank Pym around, they handled the creation story flawlessly, and created a great memorable villain.

I love A1, and always will. I will never forget the feeling seeing Cap and Tony, my two all time favorite Avengers standing side by side for the first time. The chill I got down my spine seeing the team lineup in formation facing the Chitauri. But Age of Ultron is the better film, and receives my vote.

This!! ^:up::up:

I have to say Avengers, but that's not to say AOU is a slouch by any means.

This perfectly sums up my feelings.

Age Of Ultron. More action, more characters, and a haunting performance by Ultron.

I think the original Avengers was more tightly plotted and better paced. The scale and the scope of AOU is bigger than Avengers and the character writing is much deeper as we get more into the main characters heads and inner conflicts, but the pacing and structure is not as tight, not as focused. There are a few scenes that serve little purpose other than to set up the 3rd Avengers movie or a characters next solo adventure, and isn't effectively worked into the main narrative, and there are things like the Widow/Banner romance subplot that feels forced, out of nowhere and unearned.

In the original Avengers there are not very many scenes that don't need to be in there or feel out of place. And there is a sense of build throughout the movie. The third act, the Battle of NY with the Avengers vs. Loki and the Chitari is built up well throughout the first and second act, making you anticipate that final confrontation.

AOU, by contrast, the third act isn't built up to as well. Ultron's drones show up in the party scene at Avengers Tower in the first act and the best they do is distract the Avengers so Ultron can get the Mind Stone Scepter in his possession. They don't pose much of a threat to the Avengers otherwise and thus their third act confrontation with the Avengers plus Scarlett Witch, Quicksilver and Vision is little more than empty CGI eye candy. Because the build up to it just isn't there. It doesn't feel as earned.

Loki gets moments of humor and times where his arrogance and inferiority complex trips him up but most of the time Loki is in control and has the heroes one step behind him and divided, and that is before the Chitari shows up. Even with two super powered millennials at his side and an army of robotic drones, Ultron doesn't feel as threatening as Loki. He kills people but off screen. He and the twins do stuff that has to be told to us later by other characters when it would've been more effective showing these things on screen. And most of Ultron's confrontations with Avengers throughout the movie he is thwarted and defeated. The script undermines him. He creates a body to upload himself into, only to have the Avengers intercept it and use it to create Vision. He does stupid things like kidnap Black Widow just to show her his new body, only to lock her in a cage so she can tell the rest of the Avengers his location. Iron Man is able to beat him one on one. The closest thing to a "win" he gets over the Avengers is Scarlett Witch messing with their minds and causing the Hulk vs. Hulkbuster fight. Scarlett Witch does more damage to the Avengers than Ultron himself does.

Avengers Age of Ultron is bigger and deeper in a lot of ways but Avengers is leaner and meaner.

I enjoyed this film more than The Avenger's 2012.

eh, this is like asking which was better, Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back

i watched The Avengers again after seeing Age of Ultron (4x), if theres one thing thats distinctly different about them is that Avengers had a lightness to it that made it seemingly more fun. but AOU had a gravitas about it, it asks hard, existential questions that Avengers didnt even scratch, making the first movie look like a fluff piece. should they be penalized for their strengths that appears as weaknesses when compared to each other? i dont think so.

I saw The Avengers back to back on two days on opening weekend. I have no intention to do so with Ultron. The first Avengers is a much more exhilarating film.

That is kind of where I stand. My urgency to get back into the theatre for a repeat viewing is very low.

I liked the movie, but A1 was a 9/10 for me whereas this was more like a 7/10.

Maybe I feel this way because I've already watched TA millions of times and AoU is new, but I think AoU has more rewatchability.

The character interactions, action (best I've ever seen in a Marvel movie), and meatier story just make this movie incredibly rewatchable for me.

All the characters have awesome moments, and the little details are great. The movie is also much, much easier on the eyes with a vast improvement in cinematography which I feel few talk about. TA really does look like a TV movie in comparison. I also love watching Spader's performance.

The only thing that I want to watch over and over in TA is the final battle.

Age of Ultron is better than The Avengers in almost every way in my opinion. From the action, to the scope, to the threat level, character depth, cinematography, costume designs, and oh did I mention action :wow:?

The only thing TA has on it's side is the "novelty" factor and it has focus.
