I have to be honest: as someone who's a fan of Bob's Burgers, does anyone else think the marketing for the movie is atrocious? I know Disney inherited this from Fox's slate from before the merger happened (this was in production for 5 years, well before then), but it's clear they're not really clarifying the nature of the show and movie well. Plus, they're hiding the fact the movie's a musical! A lot of the jokes in the trailers that are carried over from the show (Tina's awkwardness and occasional thing for butts, Gene's random weird comments and thing for music, and Linda's whimsical nature) are taken out of context and it doesn't help people who haven't seen the show at all.
Bob's Burgers is a fun show, don't get me wrong, but they're treating it as though everyone should know what this show is casually, like The Simpsons Movie's trailers did. But here's the problem: this ISN'T The Simpsons! It has its fans but it's not as big as that or South Park! Not only that, but the trailers speak VERY little of the plot (the family's restaurant is blocked by a massive hole in the street and the kids investigate and I guess figure out there's criminal negligence or something tied back to that, we'll see), just like The Simpsons Movie. Beginning to see the pattern?
On top of all this, it's out Memorial Day weekend....against TOP GUN MAVERICK. Which people have been waiting 2 extra years for and is getting RAVE early word of mouth. Yeah, this movie is screwed. Plus, Disney NOTORIOUSLY has had terrible luck on Memorial Day releases since 2015. Tomorrowland, Alice Through the Looking-Glass, Pirates 5, Solo, Artemis Fowl (before it got moved to Disney+ instead). The only exception is the Aladdin remake and probably the Little Mermaid remake next year!
I appreciate Disney wanting to give Bob's Burgers a chance like this instead of just shunting it to Hulu (Though I think it would've done better there), but it feels like they're doing it just for the sake of having a Fox movie in theaters for the summer.
What do you guys think?
