'The Butler' Follow-Up: Lee Daniels Says His Janis Joplin Biopic Is Next

Let the man do it. I wasn't crazy about Precious but did like Butler.

Geez, they're still talking about making Miss Saigon. Put that musical into the ground already.

Amy Adams as Janis Joplin is probably one of the most inspired casting decisions since Daniel Day-Lewis was cast as Abraham Lincoln.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on this.

I'd be interested in a Joplin film, but not by him. :down

The better question is what will the film's title be:

Lee Daniels Biopic of the Singer Janis Joplin

Lee Daniels Janis Joplin: Not a Spin-off of Mean Girls

Lee Daniels Janis Joplin: In Order to attract a Younger Audience, Yes this is a Spin-off of Mean Girls

Joplin looked a little haggard for her age anyway, so Amy would still look better.

It's just gonna be called Lee Daniels.

Seems like this is finally moving ahead.

Our recent AFI Fest interview with "Wild" director Jean-Marc Vallée had us poking around to see what was up. During our chat the filmmaker told us "...next year I've got a rock-n-roll film happening. I can't talk about it, though." But it appears he already has.

A couple months back, the director chatted with Journal Du Quebec (via Metro) and revealed that he will directing a Janis Joplin biopic starring Amy Adams. The actress has long been attached to play the rock 'n' roll singer, with Fernando Meirelles and Lee Daniels both in the running to helm at various points, but it looks like it's now in the hands of Vallée.

The filmmaker adds it will be an independent film on a lean budget of $15-20 million, and that he's tasked the "Dallas Buyers Club" screenwriters Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack to tackle the script.

Deadline now reporting the news.

Janis Joplin might have been 27 when she died, but she looked a hard 27 and Amy looks fantastic for any age. And she is perfect for the role. Fantastic news. :)

Amy looks great for her age, and looks way younger than the actual Janis. I read some comments about Amy's age, and sometimes I wonder if people online lack the ability to think for themselves.

Yeah, Amy looks a lot younger then Janis did. But realizing that takes a little brain power and that seems in short supply on the internet.

The weird thing is that nobody questions why a 30 year old Dustin Hoffman played a 20 year old in The Graduate. I blame the internet obsessing over stupid things, or trends that have been around since the dawn of Hollywood. (The "He's always playing the same character!" complaint for example. But it was okay for John Wayne and Bogart. Okay for Chaplin!)

Too be fair, that was the norm back in the day. Actual teens playing teens in a more modern thing. If Harry Potter was made in the 60s, the trio would have been aged up.

I saw a trailer for a new film starting Mae Whitman, and she is playing a high schooler. She still looks quite young, but it is jarring for me.

I think it was weird that Aubrey Plaza played a Teen recently. She's a beautiful girl but she looks mid 20s not 17 or 18. Shailne Woodley now..looks 18. Or Selena Gomez.

^Those scenes in that movie would never have flown with an underage girl. One scene just became an infamous gif.

Yeah, most actors and actresses can pull off playing teens in their early 20s. Some even in their mid to late 20s.

Damn I was hoping Lee Daniels was gonna do his Richard Pryor biopic next
