From NEC's PC Engine/Turbo Grafix to the Neo Geo and Sega Saturn and of course the Philips CDI!

The HORROR!

Talk about your thoughts on the many forgotten consoles to the big boys of Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony.

Atari Jaguar ? Sega 32X w/ Sega CD...With Sega Saturn..... All around same time - yeah, no wonder Sega went bankrupt.

Ah the Atari Toilet-er I mean Jaguar. I know people who actually held the controller said it was comfortable, but that design was awful. At least it will find new life in the Retro VGS:

Yeah Sega really screwed up with the add-ons. I could live with the Sega CD, but the 32X was such an idiotic waste of time and resources. The Saturn was the next logical step and Sega of America should have touted that machine rather than promote the Genesis on life support. But I do believe the Mega Drive's sales in Japan is what really caused such dissonance.

I remember those NeoGeo systems costing like $600-$700 way back when.

course, it's kind of ironic that today's consoles push the $400-$500 range.

but still, $600-$700 back then was just way too insane and pricey for a home console. in fact, it still is.......lol.

I gotta put out some love for the Atari Lynx. Still have the one my dad game me. Full color, backlit handheld system from 1989! 14 years before Nintendo released the Gameboy Advance SP.

It even had left and right handed compatibility just by turning the thing upside down. The major downside? Took 6 AA batteries. O_O

The games I have:
California Games (extreme sports game)
Ms Pac-Man
Qix
Rampage
Gauntlet

No joke. Amazingly fun system.

I had that handheld Turbo Grafix system.

that was.......big and clunky.......lol.

Actually, with inflation the Neo Geo (MSRP of 650) would be about 1,100 dollars and change in today's money.

While the PS4 at 400 dollars in 1991 would only cost about 220 in modern money.

So consoles have become dirt cheap. Our currency has seriously devalued.

weren't the games for the Neo Geo system insanely pricey as well?

It's sad the 3DO got the reputation of the interactive porn machine. Weird that Valve is following a similar business model with the Steam Machines.

well, you needed something to play on that expensive machine.....:o

according to the wiki, the games cost around $200 and up. meowch!!

I owned a Neo Geo cartridge system. I only ever bought two games, Fatal Fury Special and Art of Fighting 2, but never owned both at the same time. I remember paying something around £180 for FFS and about £220 for AoF2. As my biggest passion was for arcade games, I loved having that console, especially at the time, when the idea of an arcade-perfect port rested on the shoulders of the Mega Drive and SNES. As a kid in my teens, it was such a thrill to have the exact same game in the arcade at home.

The next console I owned was the Japanese PC Engine; probably my favourite console, it had so many great games, which came on smart and sleek HuCards, and were encased in glorious box art.

I've never heard of the Japanese PC Engine, but those anime looking games look cool!

Turbo Grafx/PC Engine is shockingly a good console it's just not as well known in the States because it was sandwiched between the Genesis and the Super Nintendo. I did not know Bonk was their mascot. If I could find one right now, I would probably get it, but the games are probably super expensive.

oh, so the PC Engine was the Turbo Grafx??

well, then, I owned the handheld version once and I knew a friend who owned a Turbo Grafx console.

Yep, they're one and the same. They changed the name for marketing reasons to showcase the "Turbo" feature added in the US version of the console, hence the name Turbo Grafx 16 (16-bit graphics in TURBO SPEED!). :p I particularly didn't care for either name of the system, but the gaming library was pretty good (but mostly Japanese games).

I heard of the PC Engine because I love Castlevania, and that system has the famous exclusive; Rondo of Blood.
I don't have PSP, so I can't play it on that system.

ah, thanks!

I do remember those game cards now.

if I remember correctly, the handheld version had some kind of TV tuner function in it?

or maybe that was the Game Gear?

I think that's both!

^^ ah, that's right!!

I think that Turbo Grafx was just too big and bulky. so it wasn't that practical for portability like the Gameboy and Gamegear were.
