One year I bought everyone a DVD based on the types of movies they like that I know they haven't already seen. One year I just bought everyone a Visa giftcard.

Limits my shopping to one store.

For the 5year old & 8 year old girls - Barbie dolls and/or clothes

I tend to give people who live on their own sheets or towels when I can't figure out what else to give (trust me you can never own enough sheets or towels).

With boys between the ages of 6 and 12 - Action Figures
With girls between the ages of 6 and 12 - Female Action Figures (if I can find them), Barbie stuff otherwise

Over that age, they get books, though I used to give a metal tool box at least once to a child. Metal tool boxes are great storage devices - almost indestructible. Great for storing video game accessories, CD's, or other stuff.

Ask their parents what they're into.

I always try to find out what a person is into and get gifts based on that if they don't give me a list. My family does a grab bag for all the adults and last year I got my sister, who's really into running and was able to start training for her first half marathon. The half marathon had training shirts available specifically designed for that race, so got that, a book of training tips and a kit that helped "rejuvenate" feet.

Already got one gift for Christmas since my nephew is really into Star Wars. Got him the Tauntaun sleeping bag Thinkgeek.com started to sell on their website after the overwhemling positive response to the Aprils Fool's Joke. Can't wait to see him open that Christmas morning.

Jewelry. Make it actual gold or sterling silver if you can, but even tasteful junk jewelry is ok. The trick is to notice what she actually wears. For example if she likes small studs you don't get her huge hoops.

Eh, I don't really do the whole jewelry thing unless it's a serious gift for a girl I've been with for some time. Do appreciate the suggestion though and if you have any more feel free.

Whatever you do, do not just buckle and give her cash. Giving a girl cash implies you see her as a ****e.

If this is a girl you're seeing, you're gonna have to think of a gift that is specifically suited for her. Is there anything she needs (a lost item, something that needs replacing, ect.)? Is there something you noticed that she has an interest in that you could buy or buy something related to?

Haha. No, of course. I put more thought than that into a gift if it's for a girl I'm seeing/dating, but it's somewhat difficult because I don't really know what she's into other than shopping/dressing up, and I don't just want to get her a gift card somewhere. It's the same as cash pretty much.
