Fox Gives Pilot Order To Carter Bays/Craig Thomas Comedy With Becki Newton Starring
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

In what may be the last pilot order this season, Fox has given the green light to Goodwin Games, a single-camera comedy from How I Met Your Mother co-creators/executive producers Carter Bays & Craig Thomas and fellow HIMYM executive producer Chris Harris. The project had been cast-contingent on securing Ugly Betty alumna Becki Newton as one of the leads. After lengthy negotiations, Newton, who fielded several other pilot offers, agreed to board the project, triggering a pilot order. The Goodwin Games, from 20th Century Fox TV where Bays, Thomas and Harris are under deals, revolves around three siblings, one played by Newton, who reconnect after the death of their father. The project extends Newton’s relationship with Bays, Thomas and Harris — she currently recurs on How I Met Your Mother. I hear that the HIMYM stint actually came out of an early exploratory meeting the actress had with Bays and Thomas about Goodwin Games. The project landed at Fox in September with a big put pilot commitment after a bidding war. Newton is with UTA, Management 360 and attorney Rick Genow. Bays and Thomas are with UTA, Harris is with CAA and 3 Arts.
Felicity alum Scott Foley has joined Becki Newton as one of the three leads in Goodwin Games, Fox’s single-camera comedy from the How I Met Your Mother trio of Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris. The 20th TV-produced project revolves around three siblings — two of them Newton and Foley — who reconnect after the death of their father when he leaves them his fortune — but only if they agree to his terms. The project reunites Foley with 20th TV after starring in the studio’s CBS military drama The Unit. The actor, repped by ICM and Brillstein Entertainment, most recently recurred on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.

Cast is shaping up nicely and Bays & Thomas have already given me one of the best comedies (and definitely the best multicamera) of the decade, so I have high hopes for this. Hope it works out.

Deadline:
Jake Lacy, who got his break as one of the leads on the ABC comedy Better With You, has landed the third lead opposite Becki Newton and Scott Foley in The Goodwin Games, Fox’s single-camera comedy from the How I Met Your Mother trio of Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris. The 20th TV-produced project revolves around three siblings (Newton, Foley, Lacy) who reconnect after the death of their father when he leaves them his fortune — but only if they agree to his terms. Lacey plays the youngest Goodwin sibling Jimmy, a scruffy petty thief who is has just gotten out of jail – yet again. Peyton Reed is directing.

I'm only giving this a shot because of Becki Newton, otherwise meh...

I'm giving it a shot because it's Carter/Bays. After How I Met Your Mother, anything they do deserves a fair chance.

THE GOODWIN GAMES
Where there’s a will, there’s a way. And when that will’s worth more than 20 million dollars, you can bet someone’s going to find a way to get the cash. From the executive producers of “How I Met Your Mother,” THE GOODWIN GAMES is a single-camera comedy that tells the story of three grown siblings who return home after their father’s death, and unexpectedly find themselves poised to inherit a vast fortune – if they adhere to their late father’s wishes. If any of the Goodwin kids feel like they deserve the money, then it’s HENRY (Scott Foley, “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Felicity”), the eldest child and an overachieving surgeon. He sees himself as a role model for his less successful siblings – and reminds them every chance he gets. Returning home will force Henry to question the choices he’s made, especially as he reconnects with his first love and true soulmate, LUCINDA (Felisha Terrell, “Days of Our Lives”). Middle sibling CHLOE (Becki Newton, “Ugly Betty”) was a child prodigy in math, and her unofficial role as “the smart one” of the family still sends Henry into fits of jealousy. But long ago, Chloe gave up academics in favor of being the popular girl. Now, through a series of hidden messages, her late father will lead Chloe back to her old love of numbers – and back to the person she’s meant to be. Of the three siblings, the youngest, JIMMY (Jake Lacy, “Better With You”), could use the inheritance the most. A small-time ex-con and dull-witted guitarist who’s deep in debt to a loan shark, Jimmy may be the family screw-up, but he has more heart than anyone. Like his siblings, Jimmy’s also returning to something in this town: his eight-year-old daughter. Pulling the strings from beyond the grave is the children’s late father, BENJAMIN (guest star Beau Bridges, “The Descendants”), a college math professor. Guilty over not parenting his kids better, Benjamin has left behind a series of unique challenges – administered by his estate attorney APRIL (newcomer Melissa Tang). Through these tasks, Benjamin hopes he can get his children to rediscover their true selves and learn the lessons he failed to instill in them while he was alive. Their potential reward? More than 20 million dollars – a fortune that they never knew their father had – and the chance to become the people their father wanted them to be. So let THE GOODWIN GAMES begin!

Fox Reduces Order Of Midseason Comedy Series ‘The Goodwin Games’ To 7 Episodes
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Fox has cut the 13-episode midseason order to new single-camera comedy The Goodwin Games to 7 episodes. The series will wrap production today when it finishes filming Episode 6 to fulfill its reduced pickup of six episodes plus the pilot. Fox already ordered supersized 24-episode seasons of Raising Hope, New Girl and freshman The Mindy Project as well as 19 episodes of new fall comedy Ben And Kate. The reduced order for Goodwin Games, which will likely alternate with Ben And Kate, will ensure 24-26 originals for each half-hour time period of Fox’s fledgeling Tuesday comedy block this season (unless the network opts for more trimming of current orders).

Goodwin Games, from the How I Met Your Mother trio of Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris and 20th TV, revolves around the three Goodwin siblings (Becki Newton, Scott Foley, T.J. Miller) who reconnect after the death of their father when he leaves them his fortune — but only if they agree to his terms. The project underwent casting changes after the pilot, with Miller replacing Jake Lacy and Kat Foster replacing Felisha Terrell.

Oh, Fox... you are such a bad decision machine. :o
