The Hype Film Club
A place for sophisticated film discussion :awesome:

Welcome Hypesters, to the Hype Film Club. I'm sure this has been done here before, but let's get it going again!

The basic idea is that the members of the club will pick a film to watch within a given period, and once that period is up we'll gather together to discuss the film and share any fun info we've gotten about it. It seems like there might be some interest for this, so why not give it a shot?

Please suggest films that you think would make a good pick for discussion. I'll compile a list and from it pick a film that we can watch and then chat about. I'm hoping for a wide variety of films, so try to pick ones that perhaps aren't as well known or widely watched in addition to more mainstream fare.

I'll also update with our list of members in this first post. Membership is open to everyone, but let's keep the fanboying/fangirling to a minimum. We also appreciate the ability to construct an understandable sentence :).

We also need to decide an appropriate time limit in which to watch the film. Let me know what you think!

Look for updates in this post.

Night of the Hunter.

Charles Laughton, Robert Mitchum, Lilian Gish, Shelley Winters.
The Dream Team.

w00t!

I think it would be best to do films that are outside of our comfort zones, because discussions are far more illuminating when we've all shared a new and exciting experience.

In that case may I suggest we start with Inland Empire...?

I agree. That's why I'm hoping we get some stuff that's not as well known.

Yes. THAT one. :hehe:

Uh oh  I've never seen any David Lynch films.

I'd also add Ed Wood to the list. I think it's definitely one of the lesser watched Burton films.

I'd love to do one on All That Jazz. I can't get that damn movie out of my head!

So my 2 cents: I think 2 weeks is a fair amount of time to get a hold of a movie and watch it, yes? no?

As for films

Near Dark
Ronin
2001: A Space Odyssey
Heathers
How to Steal a Million

I'll think of some more later. Remember if there is enough people who don't want to see a film we can also take it off the list.

since stanley kubrick is a really deep and phenomenal director, why dont we start it off by checking out barry lyndon first? i read somewhere that the film technique that stanley came up with for that film hasnt been used since that very film and was also considered a very unique move on stanley's part. im sure that would be a great discussion.

May I personally suggest Wendy and Lucy?

It's certainly one of the best American films of the decade. Hands down.

Ronin was decent. I expected it to be way better.

This sounds cool. Though it will be a tad hard for me to get a hold of some of these movies considering I'm knee-deep in homework and I have yet to get my drivers license. But, I'll try my best!

yeah, im gonna have to start working on getting my license too. but that shouldnt have to stop us from taking a break and watching movies every now and than. :yay: we need to stay sane somehow.

Don't you guys have a library nearby?

i'd be game. i was actually planning to watch Heathers sometime this week anyways, but all these recommendations sound great too. if we narrow the choices down a little we can put it up to a vote.

Agreeing on a film will be the hardest part.

Don't you guys have a library nearby?

There's one about an hour walk from my house. The only problem is the crappy selection, and the fact that they're always taken. I actually just rented 'Chaplin' from the library a few days ago, BUT someone scratched the hell out of it, and didn't work. The library is always hit and miss.

Though, I do have an awesome movie store downtown, which is just an easy bus ride away.

Dumb Canadians and their lack of Netflix.

I'd suggest City Lights. For the perfect ending if nothing else.

I guess my suggestions would be:

Closer
In Bruges
Clue
Eraserhead
The Proposition
