I wish I watched Glee to understand half of those but then a show that centers 30 minutes around Justin Bieber or Britney Spears make me glad that I don't.

The shows never centers around the artist that may be provide music theme of the episode. It's about the show's characters, their problems and their story. And sometimes certain artists' music fit the theme of the episode. For example, when they did a few Gaga songs, the Glee club teacher wanted them to express themselves, and it dealt with the main male teenager not being comfortable enough with his sexuality (and his appearance to others) to wear something absolutely absurd and Gaga-inspired. It also had to do with his discomfort with being friends with the openly-gay character. But by the end of it, he got over it. The show wasn't about Lady Gaga, but her "art" aided the themes in the show. If you watched the show, you probably wouldn't sound so naive when talking about it.
