DBZ has a wacky hierarchy of gods.

Supreme Kai/Kaioshin (JP) > Grand Kai/Dai Kaio > King Kai/Kaio (Manic) > Kami (Mirko/Toxin). I'm not sure what's sadder: the fact that Kami is supposed to be a god despite ending up weaker than Krillin at some point, or that Dende becomes Kami-Dende and he's weaker than Bulma.

I never watched this show consistently

When I tried, they'd fight for like 5 secs and talk for 20 minutes about that 5 secs and how awesome they are...and then become super duper ultra awesome powerful wonderful amazing sayan.

That's why they recut the series as Dragonball Z Kai. They take out all the flashbacks, most of the useless boasting, and 30 minutes worth of powering up that cluttered up the series. It's half as long as the original cut.
