Last semester I took a class about "Creatividad en el Arte" (Creativity on Art) and the subject was shadow play. This is done by making "shadow puppets" which are cut-out figures of characters or objects which are transposed to a paper screen and with a lightning source, these puppets create shadows to tell a story. We had take a midterm project: a shadow play of our own and the subject was anything we would want to do. It should be noted that most of us study Engineering in Computer Sciences (it was an optional class), but we love to tell stories. ;D
And in my mind there was only one thing ("Batman, Batman, Batman") I thought it would be cool to make a shadow play of a Batman story, because Batman's characters and their imagery would be suited pretty well to make a visual appealing play. One of my all time favorite Batman stories is "The Killing Joke" by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, and since it is a relatively short story, although complex, it could be translated to a play of 10-15 minutes.
So I took the most important parts of the Killing Joke comic book, translated them in spanish and adapted them to a screenplay. As for the story, since we had to make it fit in 15 minutes, I made little modifications to the source material, and tried to be true to it. Later I made subtitles in english so more people could enjoy it.
My friends and I made the shadow puppets and all the props based on the Batman: The Animated Series design of the characters, and in about a month we had everything to make our play work.
I took the liberty of making all the voices. It was a great fun to do the Joker. I tried to do sort of a combination of Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger's Joker. As for Batman I had to use a program to bring down the tone of my voice, because even when I tried to make my voice deeper, it wasn't deep enough. And of course, the Commissioner Gordon, which I tried to make him sound older. I have a knack of doing voices, but I'm an amateur, I tried to do my best. I recorded all the voices I made to use them in the play.
At last all of us gathered together and with the recordings, we enacted "The Killing Joke", we used a projector with some backgrounds and to provide the light source, we recorded it with a camera, and that was it. We did it in one night, though all the preparations, including the scenario, the shadow puppets, the voice overs and the writing of the play took about a little more than a month. We got a very good grade for this!
I took a long time to share this with you guys, because so many things happened in the last months, and until recently I returned to the boards. Maybe you had watched it before, anyway I hope you like this. Its a a lot of rough around the edges but we putted a lot of our heart into this. Enjoy!
