I'm prett sure they will go that route and have it barely mentioned. The show just picks up a few months later and she has a new partner and every now and then will make small references to him.

Now, they have an excuse to make him a regular.

As for the exit, I wish they can at least talk him into ONE damned episode for next season (the season opener). He's been half of the heart of this show for more than a decade.

It's hard for me to stomach his exit being only glancing mentions from the show. They need something more dramatic. Hell, Skeet Ulrich was barely in L&O:LA for half a season, and even he got a better exit.
