After finally launching the long-awaited The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC for PSP and PC in October 2015, a followup to the 2011-released Trails in the Sky for PSP, XSEED Games might be teasing a localization for the final entry, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd.

The company tweeted this evening: “So a priest and a nun walk into a game…”

The main characters of Trails in the Sky the Third are Kevin Graham, a priest, and Ries Argent, a nun (both pictured).
Stay tuned.

Thanks, NeoGAF.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd Evolution, an updated version of PSP’s The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd, will launch for PS Vita (with PlayStation TV support) in Japan in July, publisher Kadokawa Games announced. It will cost 5,800 yen at retail or 4,800 yen via download. A limited edition including an original drama CD and collection of creation materials will be available for 8,800 yen.
Kadokawa Games also announced it will release a “Trails in the Sky Three-Game Set.” For an unannounced price, it will include:

 • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC Evolution for PS Vita
 • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC Evolution for PS Vita
 • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd Evolution for PS Vita
 • Collection of creation materials (set of four)
 • Anime DVD “Minna Atsumare! Falcom Gakuen FC/SC” two-disc set
 • Trails in the Sky FC Evolution original rubber strap FC Set / SC Set
 • Trails in the Sky FC Evolution leather accessory case
 • Original drama CD
Here’s an overview of the game’s systems:

 • A number of Trails in the Sky series character appearances – The heroes of this work are Kevin Graham and Ries Argent of Arteria. If you played the previous games, you’ll have twice the fun, but because it is an independent episode and story, even if you didn’t play the previous games, you can enjoy this one.
 • Dream character showdowns also possible? – Characters that were very popular in FC and SC make an unexpected appearance in the 3rd. Depending on the event, dream confrontations will be realized.
 • A maximum of 16 characters – the 3rd has the Trails in the Sky series’ max amount of 16 party members. From Estelle Bright to Joshua Bright, Klose Rinz, and so on, there are of course familiar characters from FC and SC, as well as new party members. the 3rd also has new Crafts and S Crafts.
 • Familiar systems – The Evolution series’ updated, easy-play battle system remains intact, and with new Orbments, there are various side elements to explore.

XSEED Games Executive Vice President talks about the challenges of bringing Japanese games west.

XSEED Games Executive Vice President, Ken Barry, recently took part in an interview on the challenges of bringing Japanese games to western shores. In the interview, he was asked a handful of questions about the issues and roadblocks they routinely encounter in localization. One of the major ones that comes up is the problem of text. There are a number of cultural issues here, mainly differences between cultures.
For example, he mentions that their parent company, Marvelous recently released a new game in Japan for PlayStation Vita. It is called NetHigh and ran into several roadblocks to localization. Their hopes of localization fell when they realized most of the game’s puzzles “were based on Japanese puns and wordplay using written kanji characters which often have multiple meanings”. They also saw that the game displayed a lot of text reading from top to bottom, rather than left to right like we’re used to. These issues sealed the NetHigh‘s fate of not being localized to western markets.
There are other cultural differences at play that must be considered as well. For example he stated in the interview that:
“the Japanese culture is much more tolerant of sexuality while graphic depictions of violence are frowned upon, whereas here in the US we are very tolerant of violence but much more conservative when it comes to issues concerning sex.”
That may sound like a small detail, but it is a major headache when you’re localizing video games! He also says the Japanese culture has an affinity for “cute and innocent-looking things”. This tends to often get combined with sexuality in Japan, too. That can result in things that are sometimes shocking for people in other cultures.
As for types of adjustments are needed to make these games work in western markets, Ken says there is no one thing. You have to consider everything and figure out how to best immerse the player in this world whose author is from another culture. He points to the Senran Kagura games as an example, saying:
“all our Senran Kagura games have only the Japanese voices in them because not only were we extremely lucky to get them, but also because we weren’t quite sure how the sexual nature of the content would be received in the West when first bringing over the series years ago. Seeing something lewd happening onscreen and hearing a girl say something in a different language while the sub-title “Don’t touch me like that” appears is very different from hearing a girl in English verbally expressing her objections.”
This interview is an interesting look into the world of localization. It highlights that it’s not the mundane, simple job some people may think it to be. It is a big job and somebody’s got to do it. Also, in addition to this interview, the post has an AMA announcement:
“–AMA coming up!–
But that’s not all! If you’re looking to learn more about the intricacies involved in this process, make sure to tune in today, Friday, at 6PM UTC. We’re holding an AskMeAnything session with XSEED’s Localization Producer, Tom Lipshultz, right here on the forum!”

About The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
Originally released for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system in 2015, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel will make its debut on Windows PC this summer with over 5,000 new lines of voiceover dialogue (approximately a 50% increase).

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel builds on Nihon Falcom’s beloved Trails franchise, improving on the series’ formula while delivering an expertly told, standalone narrative that both series fans and newcomers alike will enjoy. Taking place on the same continent as fan-favorite Trails in the Sky, Trails of Cold Steel further explores Erebonia and gives players a chance to delve deep into the inner political conflicts of this oft-mentioned and powerful empire. Players take on the role of elite military students at a time of great turmoil, who enjoy school life as they bond with fellow students to earn new abilities in battle, and then utilize those abilities via tactical turn-based combat. In between skirmishes, players can upgrade their party members with the “ARCUS” system – a streamlined version of the classic “Orbment” magic system from previous titles – allowing for greater access to abilities and quicker customization.
About The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd
Half a year after the events of Trails in the Sky Second Chapter, Liberl has settled into peace once again—but even during peaceful times, there are many among the distinguished and fortunate burning with greed thanks to the influence of ancient artifacts. Most of the population remains unaware of their abuses of power, but to the most enigmatic order of the beloved Septian Church, the Gralsritter, snuffing out these would-be villains and claiming artifacts in their name is as everyday as professing one’s faith in the Goddess.

On the eve of another successfully completed mission, high-ranking member Father Kevin Graham is immediately assigned to retrieve one more artifact that rests beneath Grancel Cathedral. What’s more, even though this is a task he could easily complete on his own, he must reluctantly do so in partnership with his newest recruit, rookie Gralsritter and childhood friend Sister Ries Argent. Thus begins the start of a routine mission that becomes anything but, delving into a new and mysterious realm that follows an unnaturally strict set of rules: Phantasma. Therein, the history of the Septian Church and the pasts of the many familiar faces who took up arms for the sake of Liberl’s future will be laid bare – and some may have been better off staying forever sealed behind closed doors.
Widely considered the most challenging title in the series, players are encouraged to iterate upon the combat style they’ve come to know in the 3rd’s predecessors by either enjoying its in-depth story on Easy or crying with frustration on its unforgiving Nightmare difficulty. The brilliant music that the Trails in the Sky series is known for also returns, adding dozens of memorable new tracks as players work their way through the mysterious new realm of Phantasma.
