Mini Trailer

Film: Brief
THE LEGEND OF MARY WORTH combines the urban lore of the Bloody Mary ritual (when children chant into a mirror hoping to reawaken an evil spirit) with the intrigue of modern psychology. The film is the story of a contemporary teenage girl’s fight against the *****y popular crowd and against an ancient witch with whom she shares an unusual bond.

Film: Storyline
Setting: Present day

Mary Gooding is a cutter. Having spent the majority of her 17 years in the Salem Foster care system, the troubled teen’s abandonment issues drive her to explore witchcraft. An adolescent ritual gone amiss lands Mary in the Idyll Wood Psychiatric hospital, a converted Manor House down the river from Salem.

The details of the incident are foggy, even to Mary. It seems what started out as a group of teenagers summoning Mary Worth has ended in a "mass hallucination," and an apparent suicide attempt on her part. Once admitted to Idyll Wood, Mary’s recurring dream intensifies, that of a great underground catacomb. In one particularly vivid and chilling dream Mary herself is a puritan condemned for "Lying With the Devil" after refusing to name the father of her unborn child. Reverend Whittaker, her adulterous lover, himself cuts the child from her womb at the gallows, and she is left to die before a vanity mirror. At the moment of death, her soul enters the mirror and becomes entrapped.
Mary awakens from the dream with a start. She is comforted by Seth, the 17 year old intern who happens to be in the room. The two bond and Mary finds in him a reason to get well, to overcome her demons.

She also meets Sister Saint Claire, a psychotic patient who rants about the vast catacombs that lie beneath the hospital grounds. Seth tells Mary to ignore her. But Mary cannot ignore the fact that she has dreamt of them repeatedly. And everything began the night she summoned Mary Worth. Sister Saint Claire, noticing Mary’s healing scars, has told her, The Spirit World wants you back.

Mary is torn between exploring the significance of her dreams, and ignoring them to appease Seth, who prefers to keep the status quo. The Legend of Mary Worth follows the course of their relationship after Mary is discharged and they return to High School, and the unraveling mystery that haunts Mary no matter how she tries to escape it. She discovers a suppressed legacy, a history of denial that has shrouded Idyll Wood in secrecy, regarding other Mary Worth incidents and the 1940 massacre at the hospital which is the possible source of the enduring Urban Legend.
The scope of the original Mary Worth’s revenge is revealed, the rage after her execution which has been visited upon generation after generation, starting with the illegitimate baby who was sent upriver. Mary finally understands her own spiritual inheritance, and the role she herself must play in the unfinished saga of Mary Worth.
