The meaning and purpose of life (threads merged)

no, you can make up stuff to do untill you die.
but it won't be " the purpose of life"

I never said it was "the purpose of life", but your own purpose in your own life.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I think life "roxxorz your boxxorz"
but this whole "purpose" and "meaning" detracts from the experience.
I studied a trade, but that's not my "purpose" for instance.

No, it doesn't. Everyone likes to feel like they've done something worthwhile, and if dedicating yourself to something or someone gives you purpose than at least you can die knowing you did something full of purpose.

Life isn't a purposeful situation. It's a happy accident.

Your perception.

There are million of people who would disagree with you that its happy.

the purpose of our lives is to gather up enough information and experiences to pass on to our young to prepare them for any kinda situation...

whether this be knowledge, financial or infracstructural things depends on the person. Truth be told, it's a little bit of everything if we talk about society in general.

it's quite clearly that simply on a celluar level, i don't get why people don't see how it translates to a much macroscopic scale.

bah, that's cheating, it's like saying you married the most beautiful girl in the world and then adding...."well she is...to me" :whatever::oldrazz:

I always wanted to train dolphins so my life was filled with porpoise.

But they'd be incorrect. I have no problem with people attempting to find meaning within their own existence, but trying to meaning in life is a futile, and ultimately unrewarding effort.

But which is most important?

Most beautiful according to world or most beautiful according to the person who has to live with her for the next 50 years.

The people of Iraq would be incorrect that life is not happy, people who are dying of AIDS, starving, etc?

LOL You say that like it's a chore.

That's redundant.:huh::cmad:

I always wanted to train dolphins so my life was filled with porpoise.

Porpoises aren't even the same species.:cmad:

and dolphins have to be known to attack them.:meow:

I said that life is an opportunity (if utilized) to better ourselves in every way in order to reach our human potential. You don't have to take the opportunity. So bettering yourself is not the only way to go.
Right, so your purpose of life is, to be handed an opportunity that we never asked for.
That's still not a purpose.

I can give you the opportunity to one-legged hop on a green sheet of construction paper while chewing on sawdust. You caould take me up on that opportuinty, or decline.

But WHY would you want to do that. What would be the purpose?
I might think it's a very essential act. Another person might think it's ******ed.
All sense of "purpose" is therefore relative, subjective, and, in the cosmic scheme, meaningless.

my self impossed need for brevity is betraying my point.
there's no need to look for a purpose in life.
if we knew what it was, there'd be no point to anything, and there's a high probability that there is NO purpose.
people need to just BE this whole "purpose" thing, ends up ****ing us up more often than not.

Fried Gold said:

How can you decide that for over 6 billion people?

I don't personally find it futile at all. In fact I find it liberating and very rewarding as I accomplish one by one the goals that I have dedicated my time on earth towards.

That doesn't mean there isn't one. There's just no objective way to view it.

the word porpoise is used to refer to dolphins outside the scientific community.:cmad:

Are you looking at this the way that I am?

The purpose of our individual lives vs. The purpose of life on Earth from a Cosmic standpoint.

theres so many threads on this, and still have no idea

It's still inaccurate!:cmad:

that's the one I'm against.
the individual "purpose" to me seems more like a set of goals. but I have nothing against that one.
though even those tend to mess up our minds.

No, my purpose in life is to be handled the opportunity to do what I want for myself.

opportunity - a chance for advancement, progress or profit.

Bad example. Thats not an opportunity.

Your position seems to be "None of it matters, just live"

But you could easily say "None of it matters, just die!"

So what drives you? What do you want out of life? I ask because I'm curious and not so much in the context of this discussion.:o:)

The one I'm speaking on is the first one.

The second one is merely speculation and is very very futile to debate.

That is right up there to the question, "Does G-d exist?"

"Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations. And, finally, here are some completely gratuitous pictures of penises to annoy the censors and to hopefully spark some sort of controversy, which, it seems, the only way, these days, to get the jaded, video-sated public off their ****ing arses and back in the sodding cinema. Family entertainment, bollocks! What they want is filth! People doing things to each other with chainsaws during Tupperware parties. Babysitters being stabbed with knitting needles by gay presidential candidates. Vigilante groups strangling chickens, armed bands of theatre critics exterminating mutant goats… Where's the fun in pictures? Oh, well, there we are. Here's the theme music. Goodnight."
