For life in general, it is to procreate (creating more life), survive as long as possible and then to provide fodder for other life.

it varies from year to year, sometimes artistic/intellectual pursuits and seeing them come to fruition, other times money/success.
07 seems to be starting out as an artistic/intellectual year.

the individual "purpose" to me seems more like a set of goals. but I have nothing against that one.
though even those tend to mess up our minds.
