I'm fairly certain the original team was Dr. Strange, Hulk and Namor, with Silver Surfer joining a little later, and Valkyrie and Nighthawk joining not that long after that.

You're right... I checked the Marvel wiki... my collection starts with issue 32 and the Defenders didn't have Namor or the Silver Surfer at that point.
