WOW, The first week of the month is nothing but minis and books that have the grim reaper hanging over them. Franken-Castle is a goner and as much as I like HAWKEYE & MOCKINGBIRD, I get the feeling it may be canceled before it hits the 12 issue mark. That pretty much leaves just The Boys. That's probably why I'm gonna give Wolverine #1 a shot. Hell, why not? Aaron's writing it isn't he?

HAUNT #9
AVENGERS: CHILDREN'S CRUSADE #2
GORILLA MAN #3
I AM AN AVENGER #1

YOUNG ALLIES #4

I love how the collection of the Clone Saga is called an "epic". Most fans would call it...well...something other than "epic".

The start of the month and we see the Marvel marketing strategy at work. Most of their output seems to be mini's at $4 a pop. Thus, six comics now costs me about $23. Just a few years ago (less than two), I could buy 7-8 comics for that much. Clearly, Marvel is out to flood and drain all the dollars the market has left before collapsing it, to grow fat on merchandise licenses. They care less for the plight of their retailers and fans than politicians do for voters. Clearly, no one at Marvel believes the fall of 1994 will ever happen again, despite this being a historic recession.

Despite that, most of the stuff there is stuff I actually look forward to, I just hate to spend so much on it.

I am amazed that YOUNG ALLIES' cancellation has not been announced. Sales are horrible. I like the book, but the sales are atrocious for an ongoing series; it debuted at near cancellation range, and that was with a reprint. Issue six has been solicited and I am amazed it will even go that far, as ATLAS won't and it sells better. If it makes it to a 10th issue I will be flabbergasted. Maybe Marvel is deluded enough to think SPIDER-GIRL will have a good debut and boost YOUNG ALLIES? Which is the opposite of what will happen, but since when has Marvel studied the market and adapted properly? Marvel seems to plan things like they're on Exiles Island, separated from all modern civilization and left repeating their own outdated propaganda for eternity.

I AM AN AVENGER #1 (OF 5) $3.99
SHADOWLAND ELEKTRA #1 SL $3.99

All three of the definate titles I'm excited about but i'm not sure on the maybe's. I'm already an issue behind in Brightest Day and I'm not even sure I really want to continue it with how slow it's been. I might get Shadowland: Elektra if it ties in well with the main mini/Daredevil tie-ins but if it's anything like the Bullseye oneshot then I won't worry about it. I've always been curious about the Freedom Fighters and I really like the Ray so I'll skim this issue at least but I'll likely not buy it. The same goes for I Am An Avenger. I'm curious and will skim it but likely I won't buy it.

I love how the collection of the Clone Saga is called an "epic". Most fans would call it...well...something other than "epic".

You'd be surprised... as much as an "epic fail" the Clone Saga was, a LOT of current Spidey fans jumped on board during that era and have been clamoring for Marvel to reprint the Saga for YEARS... it's going to take 4 volumes, but the fans are getting what they want.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of sales the Clone Saga books produce... though I suspect they'll be high... mostly due to the minor yet very vocal Ben Reilly supporters...

:yay:

In fact, in a recent podcast with Joe Quesada from the guys from Spider-Man Crawl Space (whom many are not big fans of the current changes), they really give JQ a big thumbs up and thanks for finally printing these books...

To be fair, that mini in which a few Clone Saga writers got together for a five issue mini to have ended it "their way" that came out last year held up fairly well all the way through. It didn't sell too well, but it didn't tank into oblivion as some genuine ongoing titles.

In fact, in a recent podcast with Joe Quesada from the guys from Spider-Man Crawl Space (whom many are not big fans of the current changes), they really give JQ a big thumbs up and thanks for finally printing these books...

Well, it's either Marvel puts it in print, or continues to lose readers to illegal downloads of scanned material. It'll probably sell okay.

Nice small week but an awesome week. I'd like to suggest to my fellow comic readers that if you're not reading Sweet Tooth...give it a shot. It's a very amazing story. Jeff Lemire is gonna be an all star in a few years. Might as well get on the bandwagon while you can. :oldrazz:

I think I'm literally the only person who actually gave Sweet Tooth a try, and didn't care for it. People keep bringing it up & loving it so much that I feel like I need to dig up the older issues or buy the trade to re-read it.

I'll admit that at first the story didn't suck me in right off the bat but by the third issue, at least for me, it made me a huge fan of the series.

It's also a Vertigo series and most times, when it comes to Vertigo, they don't really catch a huge audience. Most of those books generally have a hardcore cult following.

Sweet Tooth is just something I would suggest people give a shot if they haven't already. I can see if it's not someones cup of tea though.

Just like my buddy suggesting I read Cowboy Ninja Viking. I read it and it really didn't do anything for me but I see a lot of people raving how awesome it is. Maybe I will give it another shot in the coming months...

Sweet Tooth is doing pretty well sales-wise. I think it's about average for a Vertigo series on singles sells, but the first trade sold really well (it was number 1 on the trades chart when it first came out, and was still in the top the month afterward, I think).

I don't remember how much I read honestly, I want to say I got to issue 4 but my memory is fuzzy. I just couldn't get into it. I may give it another try, though.

DC COMICS
BRIGHTEST DAY #9 $2.99
JACK OF FABLES #47 (MR) $2.99
REBELS #20 $2.99 (LOBO! :D)
SECRET SIX #25 $2.99 (Hopefully, unlike the previous issue, this one actually makes sense.)

MARVEL COMICS
CAPTAIN AMERICA FOREVER ALLIES #2 (OF 4) $3.99 (Maybe. First issue was decent but $16 for 4 issues of "decent" is pretty steep, especially since it's yet another "Cap's past comes back to haunt him" plot, which I see plenty of in the main series.)
GORILLA MAN #3 (OF 3) $3.99 (This mini's been great. Very pulpy/'30s serial/Jonny Quest feel.)
HAWKEYE & MOCKINGBIRD #4 $2.99
HEROIC AGE ONE MONTH TO LIVE #1 (OF 5) $2.99 (Sounds interesting. I'll give the first issue a try, at least.)
I AM AN AVENGER #1 (OF 5) $3.99 (This and Age of Heroes, it occurred to me, are basically Marvel's modern version of Solo Avengers/Avengers Spotlight. I love seeing the little slices of parts of the Marvel universe I usually don't, and I can always skip anything that doesn't interest me while still having 2 or 3 other stories to keep the issue (kind of) worth its cover price. I wish they'd just make this a series and do like 2 stories, each taking up half the page count, but this format's okay too.)
INCREDIBLE HULKS #612 $3.99 (Giving this a try since Jen, Skaar, and an intelligent Hulk are featured in it and Jeph Loeb's name is not attached.)
ORIGINS OF MARVEL COMICS X-MEN #1 $3.99 (Good idea for Marvel. I wonder if they'll be faithful representations of the origins or if they'll retcon a bunch of stuff like DC's origin stories always do. I'm not buying this particular one 'cause years of terrible X-Men comics and directions have finally made me stop caring about them, but I'll keep an eye on this series for characters I do actually care about.)
TASKMASTER #1 (OF 4) $3.99
THOR FOR ASGARD #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (The Thor onslaught is officially starting... :hehe:)
YOUNG ALLIES #4 $2.99 (Still undecided about whether I want to continue with this. It's okay but it doesn't really grab me the way truly great teen team books have. Then again, the "team" doesn't actually exist yet because McKeever is decompressing the hell out of their formation.)

F***in' hell, this is a big week. I suspect most of my "maybes" are going to turn into "no's."

:yay:
My unbroken run of Spider-Man comics started toward the end of the Clone Saga. I read them sporadically before that, but Steve Skroce's art caught my eye. (What the hell is he up to now, anyway?) In retrospect, I don't know how I actually stuck with those comics for so long. That was a pretty terrible time for Spider-Man. Peter Parker came back, there were some decent stories with the new Rose and that Delilah chick, and then... Mackie seemed to completely run out of ideas. :o

But yeah, the Clone Saga coincided with when I was finally starting to really get into comics, so I have strong memories of it and tend to remember the good more than the bad. And in spite of its one really major fault of claiming Ben was the true Peter Parker, it had a lot of good parts.

To be fair about YOUNG ALLIES, McKeever has claimed he never intended them to be a straight up "team" that all meets in the same crash pad and has decoder rings. In interviews for the series he kept stating that while the featured heroes would unite, they weren't a full on team and had their own lives. They all basically live in the same area of Manhattan and end up running into each other dealing with the same threats. And to be technical, all of the featured heroes teamed up in issue one. Even NEW AVENGERS didn't do that until issue two.

Frankly, I think Marvel just wanted to keep the name "Young Allies" in copyright after so many years and they simply chose this book to be called that.

They have tried to coordinate efforts against the Bastards Of Evil via email, but to be honest Rikki keeps showing her inexperience. For someone seemingly trained by Capt. America and SHIELD in another universe, she seems to walk into traps about as easily as Penny Gadget or Nancy Drew.

Meh, I've never been big on "non-teams." If you're going to feature the same handful of characters in the series, they should just be a team. The way Young Allies is going now, it's like following two different narratives with some common threads between them. It's jarring to me.

SWEET TOOTH #13 (MR) $2.99
SHADOWLAND #3 (OF 5) SL $3.99
HEROIC AGE: ONE MONTH TO LIVE #1 $2.99

Gonna hold off 'til next week to pick them up.
