Is there a reason people don't want Zod besides the fact he was in a movie before/he isn't Brainiac?

All they need now is Otis and Luthor.

For Otis, I nominate....

he was used before and he's just not that interesting. If he's in addition to someone ok I guess. But Superman in my opinion has alot better villains than Zod

Probably because we've seen him before. People always say Superman doesnt have a great villain lineup but i disagree, most people just dont know enough about superman to see how awesoem some of his villains are. Im okay with this decision just because i still think there will be other minor villains. possibly metallo will take a similar role as the scarecrow did in batman.

It looks like they want to build this up teh same way they did with Batman. Plus when they finally do use brainiac or doomsday or whoever theyll be given a bigger budget.

That's the biggest reason. We've all been hoping for so long to see a superman villain that hasn't been on screen yet--my reaction is basically 'alright well let's get that out of the way then.'

Yeah Zod is a great villain, easily one of the best and most interesting in the Superman canon.

It's like complaining about Nolan using the Joker in TDK when he has already been in B89.

Now if Zod will turn out to me more or less a cheap rehash of the Donner character then I will understand the complains.

Personally, I would prefer a multitude of other villains before Zod, and yes, a part of it has to do with his inclusion in a previous film. Actually it's probably more so the inclusion of Lex Luther in every film (which is understandable, but not as the main guy all the time)

After 5 movies, it just felt like an opportune time (especially given the more advanced technology versus 20-30 years ago) to finally present Superman with some of his other rogues, that could be very interesting and visually arresting in their own right.

MAN OF STEEL

From Bleeding Cool:
Michael Shannon Officially Cast As Zod In New Superman Movie, Man Of Steel
Brendon Connelly said:
Michael Shannon will be playing General Zod in the new Superman movie, which has now been officially referred to Man of Steel for the very first time.

Not Superman: Man of Steel, just Man of Steel.

Zack Snyder explains his casting choice thus:

Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.
That’s true. Shannon is what would happen if Malice and Intelligence were to get spliced together at the Intensity factory. I have to say, I like this casting a great deal.

So… are we now to disregard all of the Luthor talk? And what about Non and Ursa? Are they the next roles to be filled? It seems like a non-stop gossothon with these huge tentpoles.

Here’s the full press release:
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder’s new Superman film, titled “Man of Steel.”

“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

Snyder stated, “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

As General Zod, Shannon will go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Michael Shannon was honored with an Academy Award® nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road,” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Shannon was most recently seen in the award-winning HBO drama series “Boardwalk Empire,” from executive producer Martin Scorsese. He will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics’, “Take Shelter,” from director/writer Jeff Nichols.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

“Man of Steel” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

To sum up my opinion:

Brilliant casting. Lazy and uninspired choice of character.

Superman has one of the greatest comic book rogues gallery. It's ridiculous that only 2% of them have appeared on the big screen.

I'm not that big on having Zod in the movie, but Shannon an amazing actor and I'm sure he'll be awesome. That's a good thing.

Im sure it is going to be a very different take from SII with Kneel before Zod being said every 2 mins.

Wow officialy General Zod and Shannon whilst I would have loved him for Lex will surely make a great General Zod.

And Man of Steel is a great title.

yeah I think people will be more excited when the first pics of him are released, and WAY more excited when the trailer hits.

Not really, in between B89 & TDK, we got Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, TwoFace, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Bane, Ras Al Ghul, Scarecrow, ZsasZ, Sal Maroni & Carmine Falcone

In between Superman II & Man of Steel, we got Lex Luthor, Lex Luthor, Nuclear Man, & Lex Luthor.

Perhaps if they used different villains throughout his movie history, Zod wouldn't feel so stale. Since they didn't, and the first super powered being reintroduced is Zod again, I hope you could see where some have a slight issue with it

I knew there was going to be a casting announcement today, this is superb casting

People should look on the bright side. A villain that Superman can actually fight.

I'm still hoping thay Brainiac is involved, though.

Lazy and uninspired choice of character.
You can't possibly know that, you don't know the story or themes of the movie. You also don't know how Zod will be portrayed, what part in the story he will play. For all we know it could be similar to Donner's Superman in name only.

From the sound of the rumored story descriptions Zod is replacing the invaders from the Birthright series. It makes sense I they are going that storyline to have someone people are familiar with. My hope is to simply have a brilliant Superman film regardless of who the villains are and so far with this cast and filmmakers it seems to be going in that direction.
