Playstation The Official Playstation 5 Thread

and to coincide with today's horrible announcement...
does anyone else feels like this sounds like "get a 2nd job to afford your Ps3"?
Unless you’re a game dev and we’ll fire you from your existing job. :crying:

From the PS3 onward PS+ was introduced to at least partially subsidize the console cost if I understand correctly, same with Xbox and their subscription service. So normalizing it to inflation doesn't quite work.

inflation or not, it is a bad ass look to sell new playstation hardware for this much and not even cutting the price of the current gen console.

I should've waited and gotten the slim last year instead of the OG model, that way I wouldn't have to get the disc drive separately.

I'm still interested in this, though I was expecting it to be $600, but right now I'll wait to see if there's any interesting software coming in the next year or so (aside from GTA VI), and how many games will get Pro support. Maybe this will finally make the current gen version of Elden Ring playable.

The biggest upgrade will definitely be the ML features, like adding PSSR to existing games and upping the resolutions. Star Wars: Outlaws and most UE5 games look like a blurry mess right now by abusing FSR2 past its breaking point.

I hope this backfires as this would affect how they will launch the PS6. 2028 isn't that far, and it should be announced in late 2027.

i know this pro console is more for the hardcore players but still. No competition from Xbox plays a factor in pricing.

we'll have to wait and see if the backfire will make them suffer at all. IGN is already reporting that it is poised to flop.

I'm still in awe of how painfully ****ing stupid all of this is. Who is this even for? The graphics ****es and tech junkies are primarily on PC anyway.

The thing is when Ps6 comes out, the PS5 pro would stop production first before the ps5 slim. Similar to how Ps4 pro's production ended before the ps4 slim. So this pro version is more like a luxury thing, and not really a practical one. Its like Sony is manufacturing this for those who want to splurge more and get the extra power for the graphics. But the Ps5 slim should work as fine anyway to ps5 games as the ps5 pro. The graphical differences won't be Night and day, and people would only see the real difference, if they both have each model.

This isn't also coinciding with a big Ps5 exclusive game. If they were launching Ps5 pro intime for the Wolverine game or a new Spider-Man, that would be good timing as some people who don't have a ps5 yet might use those new games as excuse to pay higher for a PS5 pro. While third party games for Q4 like AC Shadows and COD are available for Pc/Series X at the same time as PS5, so its not the same as ps5 timed exclusive game.

With a price like that, it's amazing that Sony didn't announce Ridge Racer as a title that would be bundled with the console.

I never did like the look of the slim model PS5 heck the only slim model of a Sony console I liked was the 1st slim PS3 and the slim PS2. I am quite happy with my last of the 'fat' PS5 with the aftermarket black shells (kept the OG ones in the box if I ever part with it).

Even as luxury item, it still seems ridiculous. I'm primarily on PC and switch because the majority of first party offerings aren't exclusive anyway. If you're going in for a luxury PS5, you might as well invest in a PC. I have the Spider-Man ps4 pro because my previous console died and Spider-Mans PC port wasn't a thought at the time anyway. That's the missing piece of this particular puzzle for me. The exclusive software library simply isn't there. There's a strong case to be made for the current generation being the worst console generation to date

This pro version costs less than as an iPhone, if I'm not mistaken. And for someone who doesn't have an iPhone, the price of a PS5 is already luxurious. Its also close to those designer bags. I do think for hardcore gamers who buys everything. $200 dollars more than the og Ps5 isn't much. I also don't think the target for this is your casual gamer. I still hope this flops, because I'm not a fan of a "pro" version of anything.

Hardcore gamers are laughing at this thing because they're on PC and their pc does more. Sorry to sound like an elitist but thats the reality of Hardcore gaming in 2024. The iPhone analogy is a false equivalency because most people don't pay for their phones upfront. It's bundled with their service and paid for over time. I think this thing is absolutely going to bomb hard. There's no exclusive software to support it, no practical audience for it, and the Hardcore crowd it's aimed at thinks it's a joke.

it's also a false equivalency because smartphones have annual generations whereas video game consoles have generations that are more than half of a decade, and they always sell tens of millions of units more than video game consoles for higher prices. this is one of those things that as luxury products, the two industries aren't really comparable.

Did the Sony execs skip the college lesson about Supply and Demand?

Cut just 100 bucks off the price tag and demand would skyrocket.

I know people who buy iPhone every year though and add the latest one next to their collection. Even if its bundled to their mobile data service, its not as expensive as a ps5 pro. Iirc, bundling it to a mobile data service only saves around $100, then people would still have to pay 800 to 900. Even trading the iPhone to an official Apple Store, doesn't save much.

There are plenty of YouTubers who have every console, and ìve seen several ig accounts collecting several ps5s. Those still count as hardcore gamers regardless of how much more powerful a pc can get.

Some people just buy these regardless of its price. Hardcore games or hardcore collectors. And someone with a $1,500 gaming pc, could definitely afford a $700 console, and would likely buy it, just cause.

The Slim is sold at cost so I guess this pricing is to insure they make some profit from each unit.

This an awfully bold assumption based on nothing. By that logic, I should be jumping all over this. The majority of high end PC gamers don't game on PC because we like pissing money away. We do it because we value our gaming dollar in the long run. My current rig is going to last me the next two generations. An 800 dollar device that is strictly locked to a single ecosystem with no real exclusive software to justify its existence that's going to run games I already have on PC worse isn't that appealing. Also the majority of gaming youtube is ****ting all over this thing and rightfully so. Sure FOMO marks will eat this up, but if this thing flops as hard it appears it's going to, I wouldn't be suprised if they only produce them for a year tops.

Do you have a source for that? The OG Ps5 became profitable all the way back in 2021. The slim versions of all PlayStations have always cut costs down so I'd have reason to believe they're making more money off of the slims, not selling them at cost.
